Written late one winter's afternoon as the first snow fell....
In the distance, haunting...shrill,

The whistle of the sunset train

Around the bend and up the hill,

Shrieked it's plaintaive, lone refrain.

Cold, winter's grip upon the land

Now broken could ne'er prevail

When silence, shattered by icy hand

Lay scattered by the lonesome wail.

And as the purloined sun gave way

Ransomed from Georgia countryside,

The snowy night would soon hold sway

Upon hills & dales...and citywide.

Stark shadows complained in disbelief

Their mute defiance against the sky.

Yet, haunted symphony found no relief

As darkness hushed their muffled cry.

Twilight, descended and the sunset train

Charged thru...beyond...and bold

Forsooth, as nature's orb did wane,

It's message brought had now been told.

Poor souls beset with worried care,

Heard the whistled ring of hope...

As the sunset train turned back despair

Providing sadness....chance to cope.

Nightime doubts that plague mankind

Refused...dispelled...and turned away.

Again, the sunset train did now remind

night's reign must soon give way to day.

You see, kind soul...tis not a wistful sound,

It brings to you and me.

the sunset train when it comes round...

Gives promise to be free!
