Ahoy, Gabriella!
This is a really nice piece, and I can't thank you enough for bringing back some great memories of my own with my grandmother, who raised me for the most part after my mother passed away when I was 11.
Your descriptions of sitting on that terrace in the evening were so vivid I felt like I was practically there myself. I remember sitting on my grandparent's porch in the evenings playing Yahtzee and listening to the frogs and crickets as the sun slowly made it's way down.
That part about the fishermen heading out in the mornings was also very well done, as I used to spend summers in Seward, AK (I was born and raised in Anchorage for 11 years) during the Silver Salmon Derby. My father had our trailer set up on a hill where we could overlook the harbor (when we ourselves weren't fishing) and watching the boats go out one after the other in order to search for that elusive $10,000 tagged Silver Salmon. It was kind of funny; there would be a few thousand folks from down here in the 'lower 48' who would spend hundreds and hundreds of $s looking for that prized fish, but nobody had caught it in like 3 years. They'd charter these big boats and go out miles searching for it. Then one year a family from Seward, who was on welfare, went out in a rowboat by the buoy just outside of the harbor, and guess what?
Yep! They caught it!
I thought that was one of the neatest things I'd seen!
