Greetings, James E Doud! This isn't bad. It's certainly different, and I like the idea of this wise old man telling you the facts of life, not to mention that reference to Janis Joplin's song! There's some truth in this; yes, we do dare to challenge the fickle hand of fate like you/he said, and we think we'll get lucky if we just play one more card. Sadly, too often that next card is the one that makes us lose, and in the game of life, that just ain't good. And since you used a Janis Joplin quote, allow me to use a Kenny Roger's quote, since it seems quite relevant to this piece: "You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away, and know when to run!" A few tiny niggle you might want to check:
"...you have to wonder(.)” the old man said. (comma)
"Well it doesn’t work out, kid(,)” he said'
"...not in there(,) you have your freedom, how did you lose if you got free(.)” I finally asked. (again, that period should be a comma) Kee ponw ritin gon wherever you are, James, and I hope to see back here soon!
