About This Newsletter

Romance/Love Newsletter by Dawn Embers

A look at the possibility for romances that might be seen as on the unusual side. While some get the typical meet and fall in love tale, there are many others we can write and share with readers.

Letter from the editor

While there is a typical form of romance some readers expect and enjoy, the usual tale of character meets love interest to eventually fall in love despite certain obstacles, there are some love stories that are a little more unusual. Take the current times and different circumstance of our lives during the tough situation with the stay home orders and quarantines. With people not able to go out as much these times aren't quite what we would call typical. Yet there are some still finding ways to have their own romance stories.

My sister told me of a story where a couple met during quarantine. They didn't get close to each other due to social restrictions. Instead, they met from a distance at nearby apartments with the help of a drone in order to communicate. The couple started talking and sharing things once numbers and such were exchanged leading to a romance story that eventually found its way to the news/public.

That is just a sample based on the strange times we are currently facing and there are many more that could get their spark of inspiration from the current setting of our world. Typical can be fun for sure with many tales based on some of the similar ideas of how the characters fall in love but there are other options out there for us to consider.

So what are some options that might make a story a little more unusual when it comes to the romance?

1. Characters - The people involved can have something different or unusual about them. This can be the main character, the love interest or maybe even both. It can be their personality or some of their thoughts in regards to romance. Many different ways you can make the characters a little different.

2. Setting - Some of the places are typical such as schools, work, apartments and such. However, some places are different and can work to create an essence of unusualness depending on the world involved.

3. Conflict - We get some of the same stories with meeting parents and struggles to all in love that we are used to in romance tales. However, there are some unusual conflicts that can develop a romance tale. It all depends on how you write things.

So, that is the challenge presented today in this newsletter. Find a way to make your romance story a little more unusual. Come up with something on the different side and get writing.

Ask & Answer

What makes a romance unusual? Do your characters have an unusual romance?

Last month I discussed the concept of dates and the perfect or not so perfect ones for the characters. Here is a comment sent in discussing dates when it comes to romance stories:

Comment by Osirantinous
Eeek, I've just realised that in all my stories where there's a couple (starting out or established) I can't actually think of any dates. Well, in terms of what we'd define as one. Characters go out together (there's a lot of walking on beaches, come to think of it) but not openly declaring they're on a date. Maybe they just don't use that word, but I'm going to write some with my couples and see how they go (hopefully happily!!!!)
