Handling Complaints

Things are stressful in the world, and sometimes in a person's life. In a text based platform, words are just words until you project an emotion to them. You don't know what is going on in that other person's head, or life or surroundings. Sometimes a little thing can be very upsetting piled on with other issues. So, stop... take a breath and take the time to examine the 'what' and 'why' of a complaint.

When a host runs an activity or contest, sometimes a member complains. We don't like to handle complaints and the very first thing you should do is apologize. Even if the person is wrong, you can soothe with an apology. We really do want a person to enjoy the contest or activity. Next, examine what the true nature of the complaint is. Was there an issue with another person? Was it a complaint about the mechanics of the activity or contest? Did someone not understand the rules?

We can't always go back and fix what the complaint was about. We can tighten up the language of the rules, the deadline and entry. We can explain to the complainant what they misunderstood or what the problem was. We don't point fingers and throw out accusations and insults. Of course, there will always be poor losers who try to take the shine off another person's win to satisfy their bad feelings about losing. That can't be helped. And if it truly becomes a problem, WDC has tools in your account settings to block or ignore a problem member. But if a host always responds in a succinct and polite way, it goes a long way with everyone involved as far as your hosting abilities. No one enjoys drama, unless it's in our writing.

In the end, try to resolve things in a peaceable manner. We all deserve some courtesy.

#1377819 by Jaeff | KBtW of the Free Folk

Excerpt: Whatever your musical tastes may be, we all agree that it's an integral part of our lives. Many of us can remember where we were or what we were doing when we heard a particular tune, of how it inspired us, brought us to tears, or made us giddy with happiness. This contest hopes to recapture those memories (for some of us), by picking up that favorite album, listening to it again and allowing the lyrics or tune to inspire our creativity through writing

#1349558 by Elisa the Bunny Stik

Excerpt: Hands up if you loathe cliche! I thought so. Well, if you like to mock it, you've come to the right place! Every couple weeks or so, I'll post a cliche, overused or just plain amusing quote. With each one, I'll leave a spot blank. This is where you put in your own word or phrase to breathe some new life into these sayings. Really, anything goes, but there are a couple rules for this activity.
