Nemesis to Lover


Figuring out the plot of a romance story can be as easy as having an idea and then writing it up.

Or it can be as daunting as having a plot idea and wanting to include romance, but wondering where to put it in.

One way to include romance into a story line where you also want to have some non-romantic sparks fly is to have the main characters start out as each other's nemesis.

Imagine two explorers that are searching for the same artifact. Or two scientists trying to discover the next smallest particle. Maybe you have two doctors competing to create the best remedy for an illness. There can also be two people who are the exact opposite in what they try to accomplish. For instance one wants to open up a huge bookstore over several floors while the other one wants to have a small neighborhood bookstore that is quaint and personal. Oh wait. That one's already been done.

Anyway, you get my point. Start out with two people who somehow are rivals. Try to make their rivalry important. See if you can pull it off in a way that neither of them ends up being the charity case for the other. Instead, drive those two together by forcing them to work together to overcome obstacles.

As the two opponents fight over the best way to do things, have them realize in how many ways they are similar and how much working together would make each of them get to the desired outcome faster.

The romance can end with the happy ending of both of them riding into the sunset together. Or you can have it end tragically. Either way, fusing two enemies together in a romantic story is sure to be popular with your readers.
