It’s hot outside. Summer is here and she brought the heat while she was at it. So what do we do to stay cool in summer? Aside from AC which is a MUST in Arizona, ceiling fans help to keep your place cool. There’s cold water. Eat fewer hot foods. Chill out at the beach or the lake.
What do you love to do to stay cool in July?
This newsletter, I thought I’d take a look at heat levels in romance and how that influences to buy/read romance stories.

One of the most important parts of a romance story is when the hero and heroine realize this is a person they are attracted to, and what should they do about it? Ultimately it leads to the couple “making” love. That said, there are certain “heat” levels in romance stories and a lot of readers will pick a romance based on their favorite authors and the “heat” level they write.
SWEET
In this heat level, there is mild sensuality. You’ll see handholding and a chaste kiss, but generally, it doesn’t go beyond that. The couple usually close the door and the scene fades to black, leaving it up to the reader’s imagination. There are no graphic depictions of love making, yet there should be plenty of intense emotion as the couple is drawn together.
SENSUAL
As the story progresses, you’ll experience the couple kissing and intimately touching each other. Sexual tension is usually depicted. There’s usually a lot of heart and emotion, but little undressing. The actual “making” love scene is usually behind closed doors, but you get a little more graphic leading up to it.
SPICY
This heat level usually contains the mainstream love scene. Graphic sex and specific language is used. These descriptions should heighten and augment the couple’s intense emotions.
EROTIC
There is a lot of graphic language, and there is explicit, explosive chemistry between the couple. There are multiple love scenes, perhaps partners and the progression of the romantic relationship is depicted through the sex scenes.
