Hi, I'm Sophy ~ your editor for this edition of the Spiritual Newsletter.

In his view, we are all endeavoring to climb the same figurative mountain in our search for the divine, we just may take different ways to get there. Turning 60
I turned 60 last week, and it was not at all what I expected. A fun party with friends and family (my visiting sister from California among the guest list) had to be postponed until 2021 because of COVID-19, which was disappointing. And yet, much to my surprise I ended up having the best birthday ever. 
Mr. Sophy and another friend surprised me with a flower delivery, and another sent an email asking my friends to send birthday cards, which filled my mailbox the days before, the day of, and the days after my birthday. Yet another friend delivered a card and bottle of wine, (masked) and we had a nice visit on the front porch. And later that evening, we had dinner on the porch with two friends on a lovely summer evening - complete with a delicious "made from scratch" birthday cake.
I felt so blessed by the end of the evening that I told Mr. Sophy it was my best birthday ever. He was surprised, because he knew I'd been looking forward to my party since last year (as soon as I turned 59 I started thinking about my 60th). I told him we can have it next year, or the next, and make the celebration last longer. Again, he was surprised by my response, because to be honest, that is not my usual reaction to plans changing, especially in regard to my birthday. 
Because ones 60th birthday is such a milestone, I planned to celebrate it with all the bells and whistles. I was going to have have a catered meal with close friends and family, who would fly in from around the country. There would be good food, music, and lots of laughter - and it would all center on ME!  I was going to be "Queen for the Day" and savor opening my cards and gifts while enjoying good food and even better company.
Obviously the global pandemic put those plans on hold (hopefully just until 2021 if it's safe to gather then) and instead I had a very low key day. And during that low key day I felt very fortunate - grateful to be alive, to have so much while so many have so little, and to be loved by so many who went out of their way to make my day special. It really was my best birthday ever!
One of the benefits of growing older is that we stop focusing on the insignificant things - we stop sweating “the small stuff.” Instead we begin to shift to caring deeply about the things that matter most. And perhaps that's why this was the best birthday ever. COVID-19 has impacted so many around the world, and has been devastating for those impacted directly in a myriad of way ways. And yet, in the midst of it all, there are heroes emerging on the frontlines, glimmers of hope as people find ways to help and support one another, and a change in perspective to what matters most for many of us as we navigate our way through it all. So for me, I was grateful to experience another birthday while others have not been as fortunate, and blessed by all of those who showed their love for me and made an effort during such trying times - those are among the things that matter most.
