Letter from the editor



20 YEARS


It's hard to believe that Writing.com has been in existence for 20 years. The site went live in the summer of the year 2000, when I was just starting my first semester of college. I didn't actually join the site until two and a half years later, but even in the time that I've been here, it's amazing to see how some things on the site have changed and others have stayed pretty much the same.

*Bullet* Who among us early users can forget the original color scheme and graphic interface?   *Wink*

*Bullet* Or the first seasonal banner for the holidays?  

*Bullet* And the conversion to the more familiar white background  .

*Bullet* Then, of course, the months of trolling and teasing while The StoryMaster put together the massive P15 site update: "Note: Well folks... I was hoping to have the beta for ..." *Pthb*

*Bullet* Next came the trinkets: "Note: Pre-introducing... Trinkets For years, I&#..."

*Bullet* And another site facelift: "Note: #Writing.Com #Whaaaaaaaat? #2017 "

*Bullet* Not to mention the animated GIFs so we could all stop actually typing out our responses *StarStruck*: "Note: Danger. Warning. Highly Experimental... Pro..."

*Bullet* And that's not to mention all of the amazing features that were developed and incorporated along the way. Remember back when you could first order a custom MB for your group? Or when the newsfeed and "fans" were first introduced? Who still plays around with their sliders  ??? And let's not forget the old days before you could have star or shield shaped Awardicons, only had five or six trophy options, and we didn't have "Writing.Com 101"  to refer people to!


As everyone enjoys the 20th birthday festivities on the site this week, I thought it might be fun to take a trip down memory lane and remember some of the developments and evolutions the site has undergone over the past twenty years. And that's not even to mention all the people on the site, from those who spent years climbing the ranks to become moderators and senior moderators, to those who were moderators and senior moderators and left the site for a variety of reasons. There are amazing contests and activities that have come and gone.

If there's one thing I've learned over the 17+ years I've spent on this site, it's that there's always something new and exciting around the corner. Whether it's a new feature, or a creative activity, or week-long birthday celebration that unveils new emoticons, costumicons, skins, etc., there's always something worth checking out on this site.

With that in mind, enjoy the site's 20th birthday festivities!

Quick-Quill writes: "I just finished a writers conference. I volunteered and my post was timekeeper for the pitch rooms. It was interesting and I was able give a jump in pitch. Not bad for no practice. I wasn’t able to attend the sessions. Most were full there was a limit. I did hear the latest the response from the attendees and presenters were more than favorable. Being the first time there were many practices and on my first morning my internet suddenly crashed and I was frantically trying to reboot it . Of course I had no way of contacting them but it worked out and we were only 3 min behind "

The first conference is always such a unique experience!
