Letter from the editor

Hello! How are you? It’s sure been a challenging nine months, hasn’t it? I remember the memes posted at the end of the year for the last several years, breathing a sigh of relief that it’s done, over, onward to a brighter future… but 2020 hasn’t brought us what was hoped for. Or, not to many of us, anyway.

I will be honest with you – I don’t think that the end of the year is going to be without its challenges. In the UK, negotiations with the EU are not going well. The population remains divided over Brexit. Take those tensions and add them to the uncertainty over what will happen when the 1st of January comes around and the transition period has come to an end, then multiply them by the pandemic, and you get an idea of how things are over here. And I know that we’re far from alone. I would never claim to be an expert when it comes to American politics, but the US, too, appears to be very divided. Even the wearing (or not wearing) of a face mask appears to have become a political issue. When I speak to family members in the Netherlands, they tell me of tension there, too. These are difficult times.

A few weeks ago, my grandmother passed away. It was quite unexpected. Due to the pandemic, I was unable to fly over for the funeral. My husband’s father was stuck in Spain for months, causing him to miss a scheduled surgery, and it is uncertain when it may now take place. Several of my friends have been made redundant. Another friend of mine is a prison officer and his role requires frequent use of hand sanitizer. He is allergic to hand sanitizer. His hands are in a terrible state. I have never before had any issues with my skin but I, too, have a rash these days. Though it’s nothing compared to that of my poor friend. I am certain that all of us have faced our struggles.

Sometimes, when I watch the news and there’s something else that has happened – another horror, like the fires, for example – it feels as though we’re stuck in that part of the story when it seems that all hope has been lost. That we cannot possibly achieve a happy ending. But stories are based on reality. Even those set in different worlds. There is always a touch of realism in there because they’re written by human beings, for human beings, and therefore tell of the human experience no matter what form the characters may take. And human beings are resilient.

These are indeed dark times, but humanity has faced darkness before and overcome. What’s more, we have scientific knowledge that we did not have before. With global cooperation and the digital connections of the modern age, our support network is such as past generations could have only dreamed about. We aren’t facing this alone. We humans are a force to be reckoned with, especially if we can overcome that which divides us.

We need to do that. Really. We now know that as the clock strikes midnight, turning 2020 into 2021, everything is not magically going to be better. We need to team up and make it happen. It will take being kind to one another, and being supportive of one another. That includes reaching out to those who we may not want to be best friends with. I have some strong political opinions, for example, but I would not shy away from helping those in my community who vote differently than I do. Not even if they vote for parties or candidates who I abhor. We’re all human beings. We need the other. Once we get back to some kind of normality, we can always go back to our bubbles, and our dislikes. Though, hopefully we’ll have grown tired of all that, and a better world is around the corner.

I wish you well,

Kit of House Lannister
