A curse is a spell, prayer, or phrase that is spoken with the intent of causing harm to someone or something. In addition, some objects and places are said to be cursed because of frightening events that are associated with them or bad luck that has befallen former owners.

Real life objects that are said to carry curses include the Hope Diamond, the Terra Cotta Army of China, and the Annabelle doll, upon which the "Conjuring" movie series was based.

Cursed objects often figure in to the plots of horror stories and movies. Famous fictional cursed objects include the 1958 Plymouth Fury Christine in Stephen King's story and the movie of the same name, the Pazuzu idol in "The Exorcist," the horcruxes in Harry Potter, and everything in the Curious Goods antique shop in the TV show, "Friday the Thirteenth, the Series."

The backstory of a cursed object is important because it draws the reader in and makes the curse seem real. For example the Hope Diamond is said to be cursed because it was allegedly stolen from the forehead of an idol in India. If you are using a real life cursed object in your story, do research on the actual events said to be associated with it, and maybe add some of your own.

If you invent your own cursed object for your story, try to develop and interesting and unique backstory. If the object was intentionally cursed by a witch or other character, include the history explaining why the curse was placed. Depending on your story, the object itself might be frightening to look at, or it might be something ordinary, or even beautiful.

Something to try: Write a horror story based on a cursed object.
