Life is great so it should BE greatful!
Six Reasons to write a greatful poem.
1. For YOU! It is good to express WHAT you, yourself, are happy, content, pleased with. It is an excellent way to put your feelings into perspective even if it is written ONLY for YOU to see. Whether it is for waking up of a morning, a good night's sleep, finishing a project, a responsible child, or a baby who slept through the night. Big, little; it doesn't matter. Just an acknowledgment of things you might be thankful for.
2. To let someone know that you appreciate them. Everyone can use a pat on the back occasionally. Writing them a poem to explain why their efforts were appreciated is an unexpected step sure to bring a smile to someone that will radiate clear through them. We all are quick to complain when things go wrong; let's compliment when things go right! Whether the deli person sliced your cold cuts or cheese just right, the doctor squeezed you into a busy schedule, a neighbor shoveled your driveway or maybe just put extra effort into making their space look nice, a child cleaned their room without being prodded or your grandmother made you cookies -- even if she didn't remember that it is your brother (not you) who likes the peanut butter ones.
3. For your parents, siblings, or your children. Family members need to be told what they mean to you. A poem can be just a small thing, but many will treasure those words you write and keep them. I found many a note stashed in my mother's jewelry box after she passed. Some went clear back to when I was just a little girl.
4. For your partner/spouse. Sure, we say 'I love you' at bedtime or as they walk out the door. We say 'thank you' when they bring out the trash, make a favored dessert, or surprise us. But the extra effort to say these words in a poem simply because you DO appreciate that cup of coffee brought when you are writing, or that extra cuddle means the world. Too often we all are guilty of the mindless response of 'I love you, too.' and not, instead, the focused 'I love you' we all know they deserve.
5. Because you are a poet! Writing a poem expanding on the appreciation you have for someone should be second nature. Think about an odd quirk that makes your wife YOUR wife, that silly saying you share with your best friend that has come to mean so much more than when it was first said. *Blind insert about shooting bears*
6. Because being thankful should be an everyday thing. Everyone has their moments of taking things or people for granted. We really, truly should not. Because life is funny, inconsistent, and unpredictable. And we shouldn't ever get caught with good thoughts unexpressed! |
