About This Newsletter

A banner for the Romance/Love newsletter.

“Some memories are unforgettable, remaining ever vivid and heartwarming.” – Joseph B. Wirthlin

“Christmas, my child, is love in action. Every time we love, every time we give, it’s Christmas.” – Dale Evans.

Did you know? The 21st Amendment took effect on 5 DEC, ending Prohibition. What's your favorite holiday drink? It can be non-alcoholic.

December is such a busy month. We have three wonderful holidays – Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanza. What all three have in common is hope. The birth of Jesus offers hope for Christians. The oil that is supposed to last one day, lasts eight, giving hope and allowing the Jews to find more oil to keep the lamp lit. Kwanza means “first fruit” in Swahili. The 7 principles, celebrated on 7 nights, offers hope for the future.

December is a month full of hope. It’s an upbeat month. December is a romantic month as well. Why? Because all the things we do to celebrate, bring us together in a loving way. This month, I posted on my WDC notebook, what do you love about the holidays. I thought I’d share the responses here.

Letter from the editor

What do we love about December and the holidays? Here were a few things that came to mind:

Christmas Music
Lights
Wrapping gifts is just as much fun as unwrapping them!
Decorating
The food - which includes baking cookies to fruitcake
Giving back and sharing with others the good fortune we’ve experienced though the year.
A feeling of good will, despite the challenges we've faced thorughout the year.
Holiday movies and specials. Who doesn’t enjoy a Charlie Brown Christmas?

I remember when I was dating my husband oh, so many years ago, we shared a lot of these experiences, cooking together, buying gifts, putting up lights, decorating, listening to music. The hope and fun brought us together. We didn't have much money, but what we did have, we did/bought with a lot of heart and thoughtfulness. That’s what makes the holidays special. Sharing these experiences and then drawing on them inspires our written holiday romances.

Here’s some reasons we love the holidays:

Baking, decorations, wrapping gifts…in that order.

I love the moment when the family comes to the door and it's snowing outside. Their faces aglow, I welcome them inside, coats and boots all over the front hall and aa warm fire in the lounge. Cooking smells swirl around the house and presents placed under the tree. Christmas time. mistletoe and wine, children singing Peace on earth.

Princess Megan Rose GOT Fox
I love gingerbread men and fudge. I love Christmas music especially Trans Siberian Orchestra and Celine Dion. I enjoy a decorated tree and gifts. I love Christmas movies. I enjoy all the decorations and Christmas will be different this year, but I am keeping the spirit and Jesus is the reason for the season. I will carry forward. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas.

I will answer from when I was a teenager. I had no money, had no allowance. I used what I had saved up all year to buy gifts. We saved wrapping paper from year to year. Foil was special. The usable pieces would get smaller and smaller. I would wrap everything to make it as beautiful and unique as I could.

I didn’t like getting gifts. I refused to open up anything in front of others. I would wait and be disappointed alone. I never got what I wanted. I had given up by age 13.

A poignant reminder that Christmas is also a challenging time of the year for some. I see the nuggent of hope in the wrapping of the gift. I remember we weren’t well off either, and we reused and saved as well, and for me, sacrificing like that as well made Christmas a little extra heartwarming.

Here’s one of my favorite Elmo dances. Elmo has fun doing anything.

Enjoy your December!

FEEDBACK from my ROMANCE/LOVE Newsletter Dated: 4 NOV 2020

ForeverDreamer
There are some real life love stories between East Germans and West Germans during the Cold War in Berlin. One man crashed the gate at Check Point Charlie with his fiancé in the trunk.

Bikerider
I enjoyed your Nov. 4th newsletter. I've written a couple of war romance stories, one of them a non-fiction account of my own time in war. One of my favorite war time romance stories is an account of an all-female group of non-professional resistance fighters who infiltrate a major Nazi communications center on the eve of the invasion of Europe. The story, Jackdaws, by Ken Follett is filled with action and romance. A very good read.

Thanks for the story recommendation!

Thanks for featuring my short story in your excellent newsletter!

I always enjoy your stories!

Rather than misleading us by mentioning Charles Lindbergh - whose Transatlantic flight was NOT the first, not by eight years - why not celebrate a pair of World War One hero pilots, Alcock and Brown, who did make the first Transatlantic flight, in a WWI bomber yet, in 1919?

Lindbergh made the first 'solo' flight, but Alcock and Brown, in their old bomber, were the first to fly across - and they were both military pilots. Thanks.

Not my intent to mislead, so thank you for sending in your feedback. I’m looking forward to exploring Alcock & Brown’s story.
