About This Newsletter

*Xmastree**Menorah**Star* Happy December WDC Members! I am happy to be your guest editor this week.

I just finished re watching the old BBC edition of "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" where the witch made Narnia have winter all the time but never Christmas! *Sad* Lucky in Fantasy, magic can make things right. LOL

So this week's theme will be about sci-fi, fantasy Christmas. Do you have a favourite sci-fi Christmas themed tale?

Letter from the editor

*Snow5* I have been packing to move and came across an old copy of "Letters from Father Christmas" written and illustrated by JRR Tolkien. As a Rings fan, it was cool to find this unique and imaginative fun! It was written between 1920 to 1943 as letters to entertain his children. It was all about the travels and adventures of Father Christmas, including his elves, North Polar Bear and his cubs. The letters are in the point of view of Santa or his elvish secretary. He delivered them in envelopes complete with North Pole Stamps and Post marks designed by Tolkien. The letters were edited by his son's wife Baillie Tolkien and they were published in a book in'1973, 3 years after his death.

A scan on the internet put me in back in touch with some other titles with fantastical ideas I have enjoyed reading.

*Santahat* F. L.Baum's Life and Adventures of Santa Claus from 1902 presents a tale of the story of Santa as a foundling, his talent for carving toys and how he became Immortal.

*Ghost* Andre Norton wrote A very Dickensy Christmas with a reenactment of a Christmas Eve during the civil war, complete with a ghost!

*Reindeer*Isaac Asmimov wrote Christmas in Ganymede in 1940. I remember how the Ossies on this planet did not know about Santa Claus and when they learned about him, stopped work until he visited. The boss dressed as Santa and and had a sleigh with gravity repulsers! The funny part was that the workers wanted him now to come every year and on that planet..their year was 7 of our earth years. *Laugh*

*Santahat* In 1996 Hogfather by Terry Pritchard was released and was nominated for British Fantasy Award. The idea of the Auditors of Reality trying to eliminate the gift giving Hogfather that Death fills in for the missing gifter of wishes in order to keep the belief alive was awesome. Death's grandaughter tried to rescue him and visits cool places like the Castle of Bones and the Tooth Fairy's realm. *Delight*

A further search revealed many shorter stories by Sci fi authors like Ray Bradbury and who incorporate the seasonal traditions in their stories.
To Follow a Star: 9 Science Fiction Stories about Christmas and The Magic of Christmas, Holiday Stories of Fantasy and Science Fiction sound cool and make it to my list!

*Star**Questiony* Do you have a favourite sci-fi or Fantasy tale based on Christmas lore?
Have you written your own imaginative tale? I have read some interesting pieces by WDC authors, so have a look and happy holidays, whatever realm you find yourself in! *Star**Rocket*
