Root Canals, Mental Meltdowns & Cheese

This week I had my first root canal. I've gone over 50 years without needing one, so to say I was a wee bit nervous would be an understatement. I tried to stay calm—and on the outside I was a rock. On the inside? I can admit now, that by the time they were deep into their work, I was freaking out in my head.

So, rather than having a mental meltdown, I thought about poetry.

First, I thought that it was rather odd to think about poetry during a root canal. Then I started thinking about writing poetry about weird places, which then led to writing poetry about odd things. Before long, the root canal was over and I was sent home to rest.

Today I want to challenge you to write a poem about an odd—meaning unusual, or not your normal poem that's written about a—person, place or thing. To assist you, I'm going to also share a poetry form and its variation for you to try for this challenge or just for fun.

Mini-monoverse

Prolific poet, Emily Romano invented the mini-monoverse and its variation—the double mini-monoverse—both are featured below.

MUST HAVES

--Stanza count: 2

--line count: 10

--rhyme in the following format: aaaaa bbbbb

--meter: syllabic—3 syllables per line

COULD HAVES or WHAT IS THE POET’S CHOICE IN ALL THIS?

--Most often tells a story, but that is your choice whether you do or not

--topic, theme

Double Mini-monoverse

Same instructions as above with this change:

--rhyme in the following format: aaaaa bbbbb ccccc ddddd
