2020. What a nightmare. The best plan when the quarantine started was to stay inside and rock in a dark corner. In the beginning, there was the news to watch, and the lines were blurred on what was good, bad, or fake. So, ignoring the news was the first step to saving yourself from 2020. If you had to get groceries, you stared at empty shelves. You also had to plan covert operations, which was the ‘new normal’ to buy toilet paper from a guy in an alley for five bucks a roll.
My only word to describe 2020 is supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. I know there’s nothing super about this year, and according to the dictionary this nonsense word means, extraordinarily good; wonderful — which does not describe 2020 at all. I’m using it in the way it was portrayed in the 1964 movie of Mary Poppins. In the movie it means, something to say when you have nothing to say. I could ramble on how annoying 2020 was but in reality, I have this one word to describe it. I'm planning that it will be my go to word for 2021. If anyone asks me about 2020 or starts talking about it, I’m going to interject with supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. I can visualize their jaws dropping and the eye roll now, or they could laugh. Either way, subject adverted.
Despite the mess of this year, there was at least one positive thing that made all of us smile — Writing.Com's twentieth anniversary. Every year it’s a week of fun and is celebrated in the first week of September. I think the dictionary meaning of supercalifragilisticexpialidocious describes it: extraordinarily good; wonderful. Not only was it a blast for those seven days, I think a lot of us reminisced about our time here.
I still remember the day I joined WdC. I had no idea what I was doing. All I knew was that I wanted to write family stories to make people laugh. The information on the sign-up page appealed to me, so I filled it out — that was almost fourteen years ago.
I have often wondered what WdC looked like prior to when I joined and with the recent celebration of twenty years, I found pages going back to when it was Stories.Com

The best way to appreciate how WdC has transformed is to look at it visually. If you want to see the snapshot of the pages, they’re posted in a tribute poem I wrote for WdC's 20th. ("Happy 20th Writing.Com!" ) I thought it would be fun to include the images as my inspiration for the poem. I even found a snapshot of one of my profile headers and laughed out loud when I read it. I had forgotten I even wrote about this family snippet:  “I would love to write a novel about my life, but no one would believe the events are true. The latest chapter entails my mother losing her bottom dentures and my sister dumpster diving to find them.” I’m so glad I found it, because I think I just found chapter one.
No doubt celebrating Writing.Com's 20th was a bright spot for all of us . For me, once the toilet paper covert operations were completed and the rocking stopped, I knew I could hang out and write more in 2020. I’m not sure what 2021 has in store — maybe I’ll start the novel. I just know it has to get better and if it isn’t, well . . . supercalifragilisticexpialidocious on that!
