Limits All Around You

Writing contests here on the site offer a wide variety of options. Not only are there poetry and story contests. There are contests that are specific for a genre. There are contests that have a limit on how many words you can write. Some contests, poetry mostly, demand that you limit your syllables.

As you see, you can't just show up to any contest and enter whatever it is you typed up the night before. Entering a contest here is a multi-step process.

First, you go to "Writing Contests @ Writing.Com or to https://www.writing.com/main/list_items/item_type/forums and choose one or several of the many contests that you see.

Second, you take care to make sure the contest is current, that means, it is actually open for submissions. There is a host and there are other participants. You can easily see that by scrolling to the messages and check when the last one was posted. Once you verify that the contest is indeed ongoing, move on to

Third, you read every single rule on the page. Understand the rules and believe that they apply to you.

Fourth, find out what the prompt is.

Fifth, find out if there is a minimum or maximum word count requirement. This requirement is for you too! Do not get your entry kicked out because you did not follow this simple rule.

Sixth. Now you write. Ask your peers for reviews. Edit.

Seventh: SUBMIT. Let it fly. Let it go and fend for itself in the big big world.

To keep your mind busy, start working on your next contest submission.
