Welcome to this issue of the Noticing Newbies newsletter. Join me as I take you into some nooks and crannies of Writing.Com that you may not have found time to check out yet. This newsletter is about and for you. And for you seasoned members, I hope you'll find something you can take from my ramblings.

If you checked in with this month's Noticing Newbies newsletter expecting to see the results of the survey that I asked folks to complete last month, my apologies. I received 25 responses, and with the hope that more surveys will come in, I decided to extend my deadline for one more month. Only nine responses were from actual new members with less than six months; add two more with memberships less than one year.
I know a large number of folks viewed last month's newsletter and hope that trend will continue. Please consider filling out my survey:

You may notice I said a lot of folks "viewed" my newsletter last month. In truth, viewing is NOT the same as actually reading an item.
I know a large number of people viewed my newsletter-- of course, the number who actually read the letter is bound to be fewer. There's the rub--the difference between views and reads.
If you haven't noticed already, you can easily check the number of views any item of yours has garnered. Open an item, and you'll see a title block containing data about your item. Under the title block you'll find an area with several lines of information--some on the right, some on the left. (If you don't see this area, click on the word Details in the title block. It will change to Hide Details displaying more details about your item.) The second line on the right shows both the item size AND the number of views that item has received.
Above Details you'll see information regarding Ratings. It will say either No Ratings, or display a series of stars indicating your item has received one or more ratings. This number is sure to be fewer the the number of views received. But it's also the only number you can be certain that someone has "read" your item. I suspect more folks (somewhere between the number of ratings and number of views) have actually read the item but you can't be sure.
How do you increase the number of "reads," including ratings and reviews? Ensure the opening of your item hooks your potential reader, making him or her want to continue reading. Your goal should be to illicit a review of your item. Many folks, myself included, read an opening paragraph (maybe two). If I'm not engaged by then, I probably won't finish the story. Not everyone is like me (though I suspect many are).
Hmmm, I hadn't planned on that tangent. But I hope it gives you a little insight in how folks look at your work.

From kevint: I I discovered and joined WDC about 10 yrs ago. To date I still haven't fully explored the whole site.
At first WDC was like one of them love hate relationships, it was a very confusing site to navigate as there is so much packed into this little gem of a website but as time went on I discovered a number of site features, groups, Gift Points, trophy's and reading and reviewing the Newbie's section. which I began doing and using regularly.
It blew me away when I started receiving little award's and desktop calendars in the mail [real mail USPS].
I was impressed by the story master and mistresses story (especially the story master and how he created the site by developing his own mark up language, as I was also just beginning to explore, learn and navigate the intricacies of this new modern world of computers, high tech and coding HTML and trying to learn coding and build my own site and blog and website.
Then life caught up with me and I had no time for this site. for a couple years and am now just returning as of a few weeks ago.
But I felt right at home here and loved the conversations and interactions with WDC members.
It's one of the best site's on the internet as far as I'm concerned that is why I cam back and that is why I will be sticking around for a while.
From hbk16: Great issue indeed. I personally consider this wonderful web site as a school. I appreciate each moment I spend in both writing and reviewing here because I daily learn something new and mostly in literature but in multiculturalism as well. Great!

From Nico Miller : I'm here because I need an outlet for my thoughts and feelings. Internalizing, compartmentalizing, and burying do not seem to be useful coping strategies anymore. WDC was - by far - the best site I've found to be able to do this.
What do I expect? Nothing, really. Well, I guess I expect my works will be safe, secure, accessible. I expect that for everyone's.
I hope you find something that will exceed your expectations.
