About This Newsletter

“Photography is the story I fail to put into words.” – Destin Sparks

“Photography is an austere and blazing poetry of the real.” – Ansel Adams

May is a month where spring has really sprung. May smells wonderful. I remember visiting my Grandma as a kid in the 1970’s and just falling in love with lilacs because they smell so beautiful! To this day, Lilacs are my favorite flower.

While doing my research for this newsletter, I discovered May is National BBQ month. Who doesn’t love good BBQ? Maybe I’ll explore my love of BBQ in the June issue. If anyone has a good BBQ place out their way please write and share. I’ll feature them in my June issue. May is also National Hamburger Month, National Asian American month, and National Photography Month.

I’ve always enjoyed Photography. I don’t have any training and I’m certainly not Ansel Adams, but photography can tell a story that touches on the heartstrings. All of us have taken a picture that is sentimental to us. Photography can say in pictures what we say in words – “I love you.” Some images are just iconic, or if they’re not, they stir up a lot of feelings, such as the following image:

A romantic image with a military theme.

So this month, I thought I’d explore romantic photography and just now much a photograph means to us.

Letter from the editor

The goal of photography is to tell a story. As the viewer enjoys the photograph, I often wonder what do they feel when they look at my photo? Do they take inspiration from it? Romance Photography is the expression of love through imagery. What images come to your mind when you think romance, or love? Two lovers looking at each other with expectation in their eyes? Some other images might include nature; a gentle sunset over reflective waters, or flowers bursting against a sea of green grass. Some images that invoke romance include candles, flowers, and even locks. (more on that later)

There are several types of photography. Portrait photography aims to capture personality and mood. The face is usually in focus and the background helps to convey tone and emotion. A couple of examples include senior pictures, engagement photos, and even wedding pictures.

Here’s one of my favorites:
Cover of a Regency Romance book.

You have a couple dancing, the woman is looking at the man with a playful, intriguing glint in her eye. He’s holding her hand, yet his look is more serious. In the background is a dance hall. The clothes they’re wearing suggest a regency time period.

Photojournalism is a type of photography that hopes to tell a newsworthy story or share an historic event. When taking a photograph of this style, the photographer should strive to be as truthful and as candid as possible. This style of photography strives to take unplanned, unscripted moments. The above picture in the “About This Newsletter” section is a good example of this type of photography. The candid moment captures emotion well. There’s a sense of relief, a happiness that the couple can share in the joy of the moment.

Still Life Photography focuses on inanimate objects, be it natural or manmade. Last year I did a newsletter on the “locks of love.” This is mainly a European tradition where padlocks are put on fences by young lovers and they throw away the key. It’s symbolic of the love they share. They’ve locked it up and thrown away the key, trusting their love will last forever, like the lock.

Nature is another style of still life photography and helps to extenuate a mood; for example, love is calming, it’s peaceful, it’s stormy, it’s gentle. I find pictures of a beach, lake, or storm clouds are good examples of relaying a sense of mood and tone.

Flowers and candles also help to convey feelings and mood. Flowers usually help to convey good will. They evoke a heartwarming romance. Candles help to display heavier, sensual romantic moments.

Photographs are a good tool in helping to build romance. They can provide inspiration to the writer. As a cover, they can help frame the tone and mood of the romance story within. I’d like to see your romantic photography. Send me a link to your photos and I’ll share in my next newsletter. Hope you found some inspiration!

FEEDBACK FROM MY LAST NEWSLETTER DTD: 16 APR 2021

Pumpkin
Gardening: I'm growing a variety of tomatoes that my organic neighbor got started. I also grow basil, sage, chives, pansies, and miniature marigolds. I have elephant ears that my late father started, and iris bulbs grown by grandmother who died in 1989. They just keep reproducing.

Thanks for sharing. I’m a novice when it comes to this. If my basil and oregano turn out alright, I’ll graduate to chives and sage.
