June is the start of summer. Father’s Day and the Summer Solstice are on the same day this year, 20 June. Here’s an interesting fact: The sun doesn’t set in the North Pole on this day. That’s a loooong day, in my book.
June is the start of the summer. People are making vacation plans and looking forward to a break from the busy year. For me, June is a month that smells wonderful. Why? Because all the flowers are beginning to bloom. When I think of June, I think of lilacs, which would blossom this time of year in New Hampshire. That inspired me. I thought I’d talk about flowers and the romantic messages they send.

Giving flowers and plants is not new, but perhaps what we’ve lost is the meaning behind him. During the Victorian era in England, the gesture was defined. For example, if you a person asked you a question and you received a flower in your right hand that told the person, “yes.” If you received in your left hand, that told the receiver “no.”
One of my favorite flowers is a lilac. I remember going to visit my grandmother and just stopping to smell their rich fragrance. Lilacs usually bloomed in May and June. Lilacs mean “joy of youth,” and my grandmother embodied that sentiment. I may be older now, but I still enjoy receiving lilacs.
Some flowers have multiple colors, thus multiple meanings. For example:
Red roses tell the receiver, I love you (romantic love)
Pink roses express happiness
And white roses say, “I’m worthy of you.”
Carnations are another of my favorites.
Red carnations means my heart aches.
White carnations convey innocence and purity
Pink carnations tell the receiver you’ll never forget them.
On the plains, there are lots of bluebells. They mean humility.
Lavender, I scent I often put my stories means to distrust, so I might rethink that one in my writing! Gardenias, another favorite, hint at secret love. Red Tulips convey passionate love, while yellow tulips see the sunshine in one’s smile.
There are more flowers and herbs, but these are ones I generally see in romance writing.
One place I had an opportunity to visit when I was stationed in Europe was the Keukenhof. It means “kitchen gardens.” It’s a flower garden in Lisse, Netherlands that features masses and masses of tulips. There are other flowers there, but the tulip display is full of vibrant colors and usually visible from mid-March to mid-May. Here's a photo of tulips at the Keukenhof.

Great newsletter, Steph, as usual. Photographs can set a mood for any story. While this image was not used for romance, I think it sets a mood for the story it is attached to. "Hi Daddy" . And who can forget the 'Kiss Heard Round the World' the photograph of a sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square in New York City when the war's end was announced.
STEPH: I love that shot. It’s totally iconic!
BBQ: I don't live in Washington D.C., but I visited there twice about 2 years ago. Both times I had BBQ at a tiny hole in the wall named The Federalist Pig. Amazing ribs. They were featured on a Food Network television show but I can't remember which one. When in D.C. I wholeheartedly recommend this place.
STEPH: I love watching the food shows. Maybe Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives? There’s a hole in the wall in Santa Monica that features southern style BBQ called “Baby Blues.” That’s a special treat day for me!
