Letter from the editor

Do you collect anything? I have a few small collections.

As a child I collected stones and shells of various kinds. And plush toys, of course. When I got a bit older I collected comic books. Spiderman, X-Men, Generation X, Gen13, Witchblade, Darkness and various crossovers. I had loads of them, all the way from issue #1. I also had thousands of Magic: the Gathering cards, from Arabian Nights onward. Unfortunately, my collections got stolen and sold off by someone I trusted to look after my place when I was away for a few weeks. That broke my heart and for a good while I didn’t collect anything.

Over the years I truly missed my comic book collection. More so than my Magic collection – I never had anyone to play with, but my comics were a definite comfort read. I didn’t know where to even begin getting them back, though. It would cost a fortune. Comics I bought at the time at regular cost can now be on the market for hundreds, even thousands! So, I left it. But I still missed them.

Recently, I bought some comic books. Some X-Men, some Generation X, some Gen13. With X-Men I decided to focus on Jubilee’s storyline for now, rather than to try begin with the first issues, which I am unlikely to be able to afford. It’s a start. Hopefully my collection will grow once more.

I also have a small collection of signed novels. Again, there is a bit of a sad past there. When I was a kid my mom spent hours in line to get me a signed copy of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, by Roald Dahl. He misspelled my name, which actually made it all the more fun and special. Unfortunately, nobody knows where the book is. I thought my mom had it. She thought she’d given it to my sister to bring to me during her last trip here. My sister hasn’t got it. Nor did she bring it. I hope it will resurface one day…

I never got to meet my favourite author - Terry Pratchett - in person. I spoke with him over email, and he was very nice and friendly and invited me to send him a book and he’d sign it, but then he got diagnosed with a serious illness and I didn’t want to bother him. A friend bought me a signed novel of his. I very much appreciated that. As he bought it on eBay, however, we cannot be entirely certain if it’s genuine.

I have a few books signed by W.Com authors, and an awesome W.Com member sent me a novel by an author who was doing signings in her country. A few months ago I decided to add to those and I got a signed novel by Sophie Kinsella, and a novel signed by Stephen Fry, both from a well-known bookstore. Since then I’ve added a book here and there. I quite enjoy those personal touches.

A big dream of mine is to have signed novels by J. K. Rowling, Stephen King and George R. R. Martin. In addition to a 100% genuine Terry Pratchett signature, of course. Stephen King seems pretty impossible. I don’t think that he does signings any longer. I read that he wants to focus on his writing, and that’s fair enough. If you live in the US and would like a novel signed by George R. R. Martin, you are in luck because he has his own bookstore in which all of the novels are signed, and they are cheap, too! Unfortunately for me, I am not in the US and shipping would be about seven times as much as the actual novel. And I have no idea if J. K. Rowling does signings. Who knows, though. Every collector needs to have a few shiny wouldn’t-this-be-great items to aim for, right?

It’s nice to have collections once more. I have loads of books, but I don’t tend to see that as a collection. They’re simply my books, if that makes sense. And I still have my plush toys, and some Funko Pops, but I don’t see them as collections either. I am not actively collecting them. So yes, it’s nice. I am glad that I returned to that little hobby.

What about you? What’s in your collection?
