What is Alchemy?
Alchemy as a science was the precursor to Chemistry. Much like Chemistry, Alchemy centered around the transformation of matter. Medieval alchemists believed the earth was made up of four main elements: earth, air, fire, and water. They theorized that with the right combination of these elements, any substance can be formed, such as precious metals and elixirs to cure disease and prolong life.
Many of these alchemists, began to see the transformation of matter as a metaphor for the human spiritual metamorphosis. In order to hide from being persecuted in the inquisition, they used alchemical symbols to hide their spiritual practice. In history, the practice of spiritual alchemy was shrouded in secrecy, but today there is an abundance of literature openly available on the practice.
The stages of spiritual alchemy vary, depending on who's philosophy you side with. Although the most widely accepted is the seven stages which coincide with the seven stages of the alchemical process.
The seven stages are as follows:
 Calcination
To the scientist calcination is the process heating a substance to a high temperature, but below its melting point, to bring about thermal decomposition. For the spiritual alchemist, this stage asks us to humble ourselves by stripping away our ego. Our egos have served as a mask of how we want to perceive ourselves and how we want others to perceive us. Often times this ego blocks us from rising to a higher self spiritually.
Dissolution
The chemical process of dissolution is to take the ashes from calcination and dissolve it in water. The chemical process of dissolution is to take the ashes from calcination and dissolve it in water. In spiritual alchemy this is a journey into the unconscious. When we were guided by our ego, we buried parts of ourselves. The water in this stage asks us to let go, and to release the structures and the systems that define our perceptions of ourselves.
Separation
In this stage, the alchemist separates and filters the products of dissolution. Now that we've unearthed the parts of ourselves, once hidden, we can sift through them, identifying the parts that will help us grow and those that stunt our growth. In many situations, such as with trauma, we find how our experiences can be used for the positive. This stage is also referred to as shadow work, because it also requires you to look at those things which hold you back.
Conjunction
Here, the alchemist combines the elements deemed worthy in separation into a new substance. Now that we've studied all the aspects of ourselves on the conscious and subconscious level, we reintegrate ourselves, more fully aware of who we are as a whole. Rather than being blind to the darker aspects of ourselves, we have become at peace with them.
Often times, in this stage, we find perceived faults which can also be strengths. On aspect of self I once perceived as a fault is that I could turn off my emotions like a light switch. This was learned through childhood trauma as a means of survival. The issue was that these emotions did not simply vanish. They became hidden, then revealed themselves piecemeal in aspects of my adult life, often causing harm on myself and others. Though, the turning off my emotions, I learned was a positive trait. In emergency situations I am extremely rational and rarely panic. Instead, I compartmentalize tasks of what needs to be done to move through the situation.
Fermentation
The alchemist introduces bacteria and other living organisms to the substance to continue its breakdown. Basically, this stage is testing our new selves. In life, through daily struggles, we learn and become more resilient.
An example of how I have tested myself is through my work. I often use the light switch with my emotions when dealing with my patients. Whatever frustrations or situations which might have upset me beforehand are left outside the door before I approach a new patient. This enables me to be fully present with who I am dealing with at the moment. This skill also helps when dealing with a patents death when I have to be supportive to their families. Then, I practice recognizing those emotions I set aside and putting them in their proper place so that they don't negatively affect my life elsewhere.
Distillation
In distillation, the solution is then boiled and condensed in order to purify the substance. For the spiritual alchemist this is the purification of the spirit, making sure we are not guided by the toxic forms of ego. We engage in practices that nourish the spirit. The practices vary with each individual. For me it is Kabbalah, but for others it might be another form of spiritual ritual or meditation.
Coagulation
The substance is crystalized into a solid state. We are made up of the same substances as we began with, but transformed into a higher spiritual being, with a spirit that is self-aware. This does not mean we are at the height of our spiritual journey. Alchemy is a continual process of change and growth.
Conclusion
I identify as a hermetic pagan, but practice Kabbalah, hermeticism and Alchemy. For me the three go hand-in-hand. Though, I differ in thought with my pagan brothers and sisters. For me, real magic is not found in a deck of cards or crystals. It is found in the transformation of self.
Ancient alchemists attempted to create gold from lead. Of course, they failed. It is impossible. But, through spiritual alchemy we can take what is within us and transform it into gold.

 Whata SpoonStealer  So many of the NDE stories use the phrase 'higher frequency' which I take to mean exactly what you've spoken of here: I never knew the name was hermeticism. The higher and faster the vibrations, the more likely to be 'a higher spiritual being', if you will. That's how I relate, at least--will definitely do some research. Thanks!
Response: Actually many of those who believe in hermetic philosophies believe exactly that. There is also the thinking that sometimes people operate at opposing frequencies which causes an automatic dislike or discomfort of another person.
He’s Brian K Compton  This is interesting. I hope to learn more. I found the link to this in newsfeed. I thought about attaching my reply there, but want to contribute to this newsletter foremost my reaction and thoughts (to give at least one person a better vibe about me):
I'm self-confident in arenas where I'm not diminished. I find with writing or being on a basketball court, I'm in the right element. There are good days and bad days as with anything, but I have the confidence to override and even influence a few around me. We can be having so much fun, we don't want to quit. We do form bonds and associations in this way, as we 'vibe'.
There are negative elements in these arenas, too. Some come with a different narrative and try to find someone else, even me, to blame for their bad day. They also divide, try to influence others against my good intentions, as if they were bad. These people just haven't figured out that it centers around their own aura. I'm learning to lean away from these people so I can shine on my own, wherever I am. It's tough sometimes not got get caught up in someone else's bad day or obvious negative perception of me. I can read the room, now that I am older and wiser.
I'm more at peace as I age and don't work as hard, as if I would be empty if I don't please others. I just need to take care of myself, attune. Writing and exercising are great ways to express, decompress and release whatever is trapped inside...for me.

Responce: I think the release in writing you mention is true for a lot of us writers, especially those of us who dabble in poetry or non-fiction. As far as the negative people that divide, the trick to rise above their influence. it takes A LOT of practice, but it is possible.
