Mystery novels and movies often give the impression that all crimes are solved quickly, while in real life many are not solved at all.

Some cases might grow "cold" because police have no suspects, while in others there are plenty of suspects, but no real evidence. In some very difficult cases, there are no suspects or evidence.

One famous cold case is the murder of Elizabeth Short, also known as the Black Dahlia. Miss Short was found brutally murdered in the Liemert Park area of Los Angeles on January 15, 1947. The case attracted worldwide attention because of the gruesome nature of the murder. The resulting police investgation produced more than 150 suspects, but no arrests were ever made. The investigation was hampered by many false confessions and accusations which frequently happens when a case attracts a lot of media attention. Nearly 75 years later, it is still unsolved.

Some cold cases have eventually been solved because new evidence has been found or because the perpetrator eventually confessed. Others have been solved because new forensic methods, such as DNA analysis became available.

Murders are not the only type of cases known to grow cold. Many kidnappings and disappearances have never been solved. In some cases, a person might disappear and it isn't even clear that a crime has been committed. Disappearances of teens and adults are often written off as runaways or a person who just wanted to escape problems in their life.

The theft or disapperance of a valuable or famous object might also become a cold case. It might be found years later after the thief has died. In cases like that, the mystery might be why it was stolen.

Something to try: Write a mystery story that invloves a cold case.
