About This Newsletter

Hi, I'm Sophy ~ your editor for this edition of the Spiritual Newsletter.

The Rev. Scotty McLennan, author of the book Finding Your Religion, compares humanity's innate need for spiritual searching to climbing a mountain. In his view, we are all endeavoring to climb the same figurative mountain in our search for the divine, we just may take different ways to get there. In other words, there is one "God," but many paths. I honor whatever path or paths you have chosen to climb that mountain in your quest for the Sacred.

A Change of Plans

Mr. Sophy and I were supposed to be on vacation right now, heading out to visit my sister (who lives at the beach in Southern California) for a month. We have not traveled anywhere since October 2019, and our November 2020 trip to CA was canceled due to COVID, so we were really looking forward to this trip and time away from home! Other than two trips out of town to get vaccinated earlier this year, we have rarely left our house, and we were more than ready for an adventure and change of scenery.

Alas, Mr. Sophy had surgery on his foot November 4 - and we are not in CA.

He's fine - recovering well with very little pain thank goodness. His foot has been bothering him for over a year, and physical therapy and at-home exercises did not help - so we scheduled an appointment with a new foot doctor last month, and he suggested a minimally invasive out-patient procedure with a 90% over all success rate. So, since we'd already scheduled this time off from our small business, we decided to go ahead and get it done now. So November is looking a lot different than we were expecting.

We were both very disappointed, of course, as we've postponed our trip to CA twice now. It was going to be a road trip, so we were also excited about spending some time in the Colorado Rockies and our beloved Southern Utah before arriving in CA. We were looking forward to seeing something other than our four walls and backyard, and spending time with someone other than each other after this seemingly never-ending pandemic.

But even though we are disappointed our trip was postponed once again, we don't have any regrets. We are grateful this was an option we could pursue, and hopeful this surgery will help Mr. Sophy's foot heal and lead to a full recovery. Until then, however, he has to be completely off of his foot, no weight on it at all, for two weeks - and for most of that time, his foot is to be elevated above his heart. So he spends most of his days lying in bed with his foot elevated, or lying in the recliner ... with his foot elevated.

As someone who is always on the go, this has been both a challenge and a relief for him. Instead of his usual level of activity and long list of chores - he's being told he has to relax and chill, doctors orders. No walking, no standing or sitting for long periods - only reclining ... foot elevated. He's being forced to take some "down time" - which is a good thing for him. He needs it. And while he'll be glad to get back to "normal" a few weeks down the road, most of the time he appreciates this mandatory time of rest, since he rarely gets to experience it. He's watching movies, readings books, listening to podcasts, napping. Sure, he gets bored now and then, but he knows it won't last, so he's trying to embrace it as a gift.

Meanwhile I am taking care of him and our dog Daisy - which is a nice twist on things. Mr. Sophy is usually the one who takes care of me and Daisy - so it's nice to switch roles for a little while and take care of him. Even though it can be exhausting, I'm enjoying it - playing nursemaid to Mr. Sophy and caretaker for Daisy. I'm the one who walks her now, and feeds her, and cleans up after her - and while she's always loved me, this is bonding us even closer. And on the plus side, I've been able to get outside on these beautiful Fall days we've been having to walk her around the neighborhood and enjoy the beautiful leaves changing color.

So yes, we had an unexpected change of plans - and sure, we'd rather be in the Rockies right now, on our way to California. But adapting to this change has been a good exercise for us, mentally, physically, and spiritually. Life throws us curve balls all the time - the last 20 months has been one GIANT curve ball. How we handle them is what matters and helps us get through - and I'd say we are handling this latest one pretty well, by counting our blessings, going with the flow, and embracing what comes our way.

Ask & Answer

Here is a response to my last newsletter "Spiritual Newsletter (October 13, 2021) about "Creating Your Own Sacred Space:"

From Mia - craving colour
HI Sophy. Thank you for the lovely description of your sacred space and the alter. It brought to mind a book shelf I have set aside for a few items I’ve collected over the years as a participant and/or explorer of various spiritual traditions. One of those items is a drum I made at a workshop. We must have been about halfway through when I realized that not only had the facilitator (an aboriginal elder) given us each a particular hide for our drums, but that instructions for lacing it to the frame were also unique to each individual. Later still, I discovered my totem in the natural markings of the hide. It is a lovely reminder to honour the divine nature of our uniqueness in a world that too often challenges that which sets us apart. Thank you for bringing this shelf back into focus. Mia

Oh your space sounds so wonderful - thanks for sharing about it, and the drum you made. So glad my words brought you back to it.

From Quick-Quill
I watched the movie "War Room." What a blessing this movie is. It shows how to have a War Room and how to use it. Prayer is key.

I'm not familiar with that movie - glad you found it to be a blessing.
