Romance Newsletter by Dawn

Story format is common to use a mountain type approach with a high peak as the climax with settlement afterwards to create the ending. Romance has its own particular high points or climax situations. We're looking at a few of those, both the positive and the negative.

When it comes to romance and life, there are often high points and low points. Many of us have probably learned the format where in a story things build up towards a peak, sort of like a mountain with the end, denouement as the closing element to create the end. Like many other genres, romance can have a similar general format. There is a starting point, the story moves along at varying paces and then there has to reach a point where we approach the end. In particular, there are certain types of big moments that can create a climax or high point in a romance novel.

One of the good parts with romance, to me, is that the climax or big moments in the story don't have to be negative or involve danger. It can be a happy high point or it can be a peak of difficult conflict in order to reach the somewhat end of the story being written. A prime example is the "I love you" big moment.

While difficult for some, the moment a character is able to admit their love to the other person in the story. There are a few times where that might be painful or a negative struggle, but for many it's a happy type of climax. It can be an important one considering the whole story is focused on the aspect of love and romance created through the interactions of the characters.

Not all climax situations are as positive. There are the usual story build ups that focus on difficult situations the couple is trying to overcome. There can be struggles like the question of fidelity, disputes in the work force, or some type of miscommunication that leads to a misunderstanding and causes strife.

My own stories have a few different areas where the story reaches a big moment. One story with somewhat opposite main characters falling in love has the issue where one is ready to say I love you while the other thinks their differences get in the way of being able to make the other happy and decides to end things to save from causing more trouble later. Another story is where the character misunderstands a situation and thinks the man he loves is unfaithful when that wasn't the case. Of I do some stories that have non-romance main plot lines with action and fighting but with side minor peaks that include the discovery of romance/love between two characters. Those are just a few of my past options and I'm hoping to write more in the future.

So, the question becomes, what about your stories? What is the big moment(s) in the story? Do your characters struggle or is it a peak in happiness? What is your big moment?

What is the big moment in your romance story?

Hm, I've never looked at myself as a matchmaker for my characters. Often they've already paired up before I get my say. Though....on one or two occasions I've decided that X and Y will be the partner but several sentences in here comes Z to take over from Y. So I guess all round I'm just the person writing down what the characters tell me *Smile*. Also, thanks for highlighting "A Romance Contest"  - and also for highlighting the well-deserved winner of the recent autumn round "An Autumn Australian Romance" .
