About This Newsletter

A banner for the Romance/Love newsletter.

“Flowers always make people better, happier, and more healthful; they are sunshine, food, and medicine for the soul.” – Luther Burbank

“I paint flowers so they will not die.” – Frida Kahlo

March is here and Spring has sprung! Checking my handy dandy calendar, I learned that spring showed up on 20 March this year. I’m a couple of days late, but I made it! My Marigolds are blooming, but I just planted some zinnias before it started to rain. I also have some sweet peas to plant.

Flowers are incredibly talented. When one looks at them, they naturally bring smiles and inner peace. Flowers smell wonderful. Flowers are filled with symbolism. This newsletter I’ll look at some spring flowers, the meanings behind them, and how you can use that symbolism in your romance writing.

Last newsletter I had a poll about Girl Scout Cookies. The question was: What was your favorite Girl Scout cookie? Here are the top 3 answers:

#1 Thin Mints! (and it wasn’t even close!)
#2 Carmel Delights/Samoas
#3 TIED between Tagalongs and Trefoils

Thanks to everyone who took the poll. Hope you enjoyed it. This newsletter, I decided to try something new and I have a Quiz! The theme is “Spring Flowers.” I hope you enjoy it.

Letter from the editor

Giving flowers is one of the most romantic gestures you can do, but sometimes it means more than gesture. It’s a way to show emotion, like: “I care about you,” “I love you,” or “Get well soon.” In a way, it’s unspoken emotion. It’s a way to "show" emotions without having to come out and “tell” your emotion within the context of the story. For example, Small boy and girl grow up in the city, but on the way home from school there is flower garden which blossoms in the springtime. One year the boy gives the girl some primrose. They get older. The girl shares a bunch of lilacs with the boy. The next year, the boy picks a daffodil for the girl. As they grow up they continue to pick flowers for each other, each year, building on the symbolism of the flowers they share, revealing emotions, without really saying anything.

Here are a couple of spring flowers and their “meanings.”

Crocus
It’s one of the first flowers to poke through the cold ground. It’s known as a bringer of warmth and cheerfulness. It’s also known to represent youthfulness. Ancient romans would use the petals and diffuse the scent, spraying it as a perfume on guests who entered a party.

Daffodil
These flowers symbolize faith, honesty and clarity. A chemical in the flower, galantamine, is used to treat Alzheimer’s. In ancient times, they were known to calm anxiety.

Apple Blossoms
These flowers represent peace and long life. Ancient Celts used them as a symbol of love. They remind us of how life renews itself every year.

Primrose
Embodies new beginnings, new life, and new birth. You can use primrose in salads. Herbalists have known to make an ointment that helps with melancholy.

Tulips
This flower was first bred in turkey and represents spiritual awareness. Tulips can also symbolize that “perfect love” in your life.

Lilacs
These flowers symbolize a first love. They represent confidence and happiness and are a great symbolic gift for a new graduate in June.

You’re welcome.

Oddly enough, Pragma is a sizable component of my NaNo idea (along with political intrigue and grappling with the consequences of fame). Looks like I'll be subconsciously working to make Pragma exciting.

Great topic to develop for NaNo. I have no doubt you can jazz it up a bit!

I put together a contest on this very topic! Thanks for a great and informative newsletter.
