In Memoriam

Here in the U.S., we recently observed Memorial Day, a federal holiday for honoring and mourning military personnel who have died while serving in the armed forces. It got me thinking about ways to honor the people in our lives who have passed away.

I live across the street from a cemetery, and I find it to be a very peaceful, inspiring place. I can't help but wonder at the lives and memories of the names I see etched in stone.

We can write about them, obviously. We can write about their lives or insert them into our stories. We can use their name or a variation of their name for our characters, or write about their favorite places or activities. Include a phrase they liked to say or a favorite song or movie.

We can write about what it felt like to have them in our lives, what they meant to us. It can be as personal or detailed as you want, and it can take any form. A journal entry, a poem, a story, a novel, etc.

I lost someone close to me about ten years ago, and I've been thinking about writing about them. It can be tough to put feelings into words and sometimes it can feel too painful, but I think it can be good to remember them. I haven't been able to write about the person I lost, but I do feel the urge to do it. Maybe someday I will.

Take care, and as always, keep on writing! *Quill*
