Stretch Your Imagination Muscles
On any given day, there are plenty of contests and activities that help anyone who wants to to become a better writer. These contests and activities are not always easy to find, but there is help.
The best places to find and advertise contests and activities are still the Contests & Activity pages linked in the Editor's Picks section below. On top of that, the Newsfeed has become a constant source of information within the community. The best and most results will come to light on the Community Newsfeed versus the Personal Newsfeed.
Not every contest or every activity will be the one that you think you want to take part in. That is alright. To keep things interesting on the site and feel more plugged in with the community, taking part in some activities and contests will enhance your experience here by a whole lot.
Every time you write for a contest, you wrote something new. Or maybe you only dusted an old piece off, edited it, and made it presentable in accordance with your best abilities. Either way, entering into contests is a great way to get to know other writers.
Every time you take part in a blogging activity that requires that you comment on other entries, you will really get to know more people. Some put a lot of their personality into their posts. Not only that, but the replies from others are also a good source to get to know writers here and what they are about.
Every time you take part in any activity that has an element of mutual interaction, you are becoming a better person. You are tasked to stretch your own skills. You are tasked to stretch your own thoughts, feelings, imagination, tolerance, and more.
As you work on your own ideas that you come up with all by yourself and hopefully get some good reviews for that, poke around on the site for contests and activities that run counter to your comfort zone. Write like you know stuff that you don't have any knowledge about. Fiction and imagination work like that.
Can you really grow as a writer if you don't stretch yourself beyond your current skills? |

There was one reply to my last Contests & Activities newsletter "Winning" that asked the question: "What does winning mean to you and what would you do to win?"
Writer_Mike  wrote: For me, a little of the effort I put into winning is, to a certain extent, driven by the amount of competition. While I always try to submit a quality entry, I may allow my personal standards to 'slip' a bit, if there are only a couple of entries for a given contest; this holds true for most contests on-site. There are times, though, when you have no idea against whom you're competing. All the WDC Official Contests, as well as a few others I've found, only allow entries to be submitted via survey. In these cases, it's impossible to know how many other entries are out there. That being the case, entries into those contests get my very best effort.
That is an interesting distinction that you put more effort into a contest when you can't see the competition. This makes me wonder whether you have sometimes wondered why others placed or won but you didn't although your story was better. Not better because you say so, but better because it has a structure, a plot, proper grammar, spelling and punctuation, and it all around more competent. |
