Per Wikipedia: Impostor syndrome, also known as impostor phenomenon or impostorism, is a psychological occurrence in which an individual doubts their skills, talents, or accomplishments and has a persistent internalized fear of being exposed as a fraud.
Yeah, I've got that. Do you? Oh, sorry, I wasn't calling you out or anything. I just think that this has to be rampant among creative types, and writers definitely fall into that category. It would be likely that if you are reading this you might have struggled with impostor syndrome, too.
I recently saw a request on newsfeed by a new member that was looking for a "brief 1- 10 steps for writing comedy". Well, hey, that sounds like a great subject for a comedy newsletter, I'll get right on that! Except I couldn't. Mainly because I have no idea what those brief 1-10 steps would be.
Yet, here I am, a regular editor of the comedy newsletter, with a newsletter deadline looming. Not to mention, a lot of the things I write I label as comedy. Uh oh, here comes that impostor syndrome, full steam ahead. What am I even doing on here?
Just for the fun of it, I did a little research on Amazon. I plugged in "how to write comedy" into the search bar, and guess what? All kinds of books popped up. Apparently, there are people who believe they can teach you how to write comedy, whether or not you are a naturally funny person. I almost purchased the Kindle copy of one of them because, hey, my imposter syndrome tells me I'm not funny, I can't write comedy, and I should just give up the whole idea of any sort of comedy. It was a mighty struggle, but in the end, I did not make the purchase.
I should not have been surprised that there were books on this subject, but finding them did leave me feeling a little defeated. Apparently, there are people out there that know all the secrets to writing comedy and have written them out for other people to learn. The only saving grace is that these books did not cover the subject in 1-10 brief steps. So there. I could feel a tiny bit vindicated. I will take whatever victory I can get.
