Connectedness in Poetry



As we move into the holiday season I, like many others, have this desire for connectedness.


Families and friends get together to share meals, catch up and… connect. Communities come together to care, help and… connect. Various religions get together for fellowship, praise and… connect.


So, how can you bring that into your poetry?


The obvious way is to bring a moment of connectedness into a poem, like some of the things I mention above. However, there are other ways. Like with what I call an echo (see a previous newsletter for more on this), where you connect the beginning of your poem with the end of the poem with either a repeat of a line or phrase.


This time instead of a poetry form to share, I want to share a literary device. Choose to use it or not as you write your connectedness poetry.



The Zeugma Literary Device



MUST HAVES


--One word (or phrase) but used in two different ways. Example: Yesterday he caught the downtown bus and a cold.


COULD HAVES or WHAT IS THE POET’S CHOICE IN ALL THIS?


--Everything else!
