Welcome to this issue of the Noticing Newbies newsletter. Join me as I take you into some nooks and crannies of Writing.Com that you may not have found time to check out yet.
Don't forget to toss me a note about what you liked or didn't like in my column, or about a topic you'd like to see discussed. This newsletter is about and for you. And for you seasoned members, I hope you'll find something you can take from my ramblings.

One of the best features (IMHO) about Writing.Com with respect to the field of writing is the collective trust of How To articles written by the many thousands of members.
Sure, you can go out and buy books on the various topics of writing. I've done just that--I must have more than 50 books about writing, many depending on what aspect of writing I was interested in at the time of purchase. And yes, I still use them ... occasionally.
But if I'm on WDC, whether writing a newsletter or a story, or browsing through one of the many Help forums, I can easily use the Search feature for a How To item that will answer a particular question that popped up. Many of these articles are saved in my Favorites. I even have a separate folder for such articles that I frequently use. I thought I might highlight some that I find of particular interest. (A note: not all are used or updated on a daily basis.)

And finally, just references in general:
No matter what topic you seek, there's probably a "How To" article in the vast library that WDC has to offer. Start with the How To/Article link under Browse By Genre in the Navigation menu. Then fine-tune your search using the Search box.
You might also check out Essays (Browse By Type --> Static Items --> Essays) for information of selected topics.
Remember that many of these articles/essays are the personal opinion of the writer. Hopefully you can find some nugget of wisdom to help you on your writing journey.

From s : I originally joined WdC to get critiques because I was being rejected by publishers a lot. I didn't get too many, but hung around anyway.
I like to think I am in the "paying it forward" phase of helping other writers here. Despite getting very few critiques in my 12 years here, I still feel I have something to offer other writers, especially having a lot of traditional publishing experience. It does seem not many agree that I have something to offer, but there you go.
Sad you're not getting the reviews you desire, but thankful you're still here to help others.

My aim is to be Involved yet not consuming, happy without giggling and, I hope, helpful without imposing. I strive to be a disciple who will not preach. Someone who will sit back, enjoy, and revel in other’s successes, but never steal their moment. In other words, I want to be me. The real me, not the me others impose upon me.
