Letter from the editor

National Poetry Month was launched by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996. Over the years, it has become the largest literary celebration in the world. Tens of millions of readers, students (K–12), teachers, librarians, booksellers, literary events curators, publishers, families, and—of course—poets, marking poetry’s important place in our lives.

With something THIS momentous, it seems we should be celebrating poetry every day, right? This week, as Poetry Month winds down, we will cover a few ways to keep the love alive!

*Hearto* Support fellow WdC poets!
WdC is fortunate to have so many wonderful poets. Each and every poet have their own style and voice. A wonderful way to celebrate them and their work is by offering reviews and awarding your favorites with merit badges or Awardicons. Don't forget to nominate your favorites for a Quill Award! "Quill Nomination Form 2024 *Wink*

*Hearto* Read 2022’s most-read poem by contemporary poet, Naomi Shihab Nye, "Kindness"

*Hearto* Read poems out loud to your friends, family, children, grandchildren, etc.

*Hearto* We've all heard of 'book clubs', why not a poetry club!? Get together with other poetry lovers to discuss a specific poem or write and share a poem.

*Hearto* Check out poetry books at your local library.

*Hearto* Need a gift for a special someone? Why not a poetry book and a pretty bookmark?

*Hearto* Write an essay about your favorite poet!

*Hearto* Don't be afraid to try out new forms of poetry and enter some poetry contests!

Okay, so how will you celebrate poetry beyond April? Do you have some ideas to share? Tell me all about it by sending a comment below! There may be a merit badge in it for you! But for sure, you'll get a Trinket!

In response to "Poetry is Not that Scary!

I love this so much, Lilli! You are so right when you say that many writers often limit themselves to certain genres, and I think all of these tips are GENUIS! While most of the things I write are poetry— so I have a bit of experience— this newsletter is something I’m definitely going to come back to whenever I feel a little bit of ‘writer’s block’ coming on!

To anyone who hasn’t given poetry a try before: don’t let a fear of ‘failure’ keep you from delving deep, and possibly finding a new passion. Who knows— you may just end up writing your favorite piece, to date! I believe in you. *HeartV*

Thank you for your kind words and encouragement not only to me, but all poetry writers!

Saroyan must have known sombody to have lighght called poetry and free verse to me, must have imagery and hopefully some rhythm.

Or not, though not's

Impossible
It's yellow”

― Aram Saroyan, Complete Minimal Poems

Sidenote: I'm inclined to agree with you, Monty!
