Letter from the editor

Inspiration comes from all different places.

- Jeffrey Katzenberg, American film producer and CEO of Dreamworks Animated SKG

Inspiration can come from anywhere. If you’re in a creative mood, but don’t know what to write, just keep your eyes and mind wide open. Something is bound to catch your attention.

It’s NaNo time again, that crazy time of year when thousands of writers attempt to write 50,000 words in 30 days. It’s all about pushing yourself, learning about yourself and getting to trust yourself as a writer. Sometimes, though, it can be difficult to come up with new twists and turns for your novel. Even if you plan ahead with chapter summaries, character sketches, etc., you may find yourself thinking What next?

Well, here is an example that inspired me:

I opened the refrigerator yesterday evening to get a bottle of water. As I closed the door, I spotted the back of a bottle of ketchup, and the word “Lycopene” printed in a large, bold font. Lycopene? I thought curiously.

The word caused me to think of a similar-sounding one - lycanthrope.

Now, my NaNo novel is a supernatural one, including creatures such as vampires, ghosts and werewolves. Who says there isn't room for comedy? I love to add silly scenes to lighten the mood from time to time.

That single word ("Lycopene") inspired a character for me: a rather dense werewolf who is convinced that adding ketchup to everything he eats will enhance his lycanthropic (or werewolf-like) abilities.

See, inspiration can come from the most unlikely of places (even the fridge!), so be sure to keep your eyes and mind open. And good luck to all you crazy NaNo-ers out there!

The ultimate inspiration is the deadline.
