DESERT THUNDER  (ASR)
Written for Outlaw Poet's Weekly Contest!
#591381 by COUNTRYMOM-JUST REMEMBER ME

DESERT THUNDER

Deep in the barren desert,
Amid the cactus and tumbleweed,
Ran a herd of wild horses
Led by a magnificent steed.

Hooves flashed as they ran onward;
Like the echo of thunder the sound!
Escaping the heat of the desert
Yet never a hoofprint was found.

For the desert held no illusion
Of sustaining life ever again -
Each night the herd of wild horses
Disappeared where once they had been.

It is but a ghostly thunder
Caused by some unearthly twist
Of the days when herds of wild horses
Once ran through green fields of mist.

Nature will keep all its secrets
And to accept the story as true -
For what once was is no longer
What you believe, is all up to you.

WHERE THE COLD WIND BLOWS  (ASR)
Written for Monty's Traditional Poetry Contest
#762753 by COUNTRYMOM-JUST REMEMBER ME

WHERE THE COLD WIND BLOWS

I have lived long where the cold wind moans,
A gale-force wind that strips warmth from bones;
Where the chill sinks in and bids you sleep
For a thousand years with the secrets keep.

I am not the first to choose this path
Of bitter regrets that fill the aftermath;
A struggling piece of mere humanity,
Destined to live alone, near insanity.

The cold sinks deeper within my soul,
Death is almost welcomed, a worthy goal;
An escape from Hell, and Heaven knows
I search for peace, where the cold wind blows.

Over the last three years as a newsletter editor here on Writing.com I have shared with you many famous poets. Some that were my favorites and others that you wanted me to learn more about. This month is another poet that I admire, the only difference is she is not famous, at least not yet. Her poetry has always touched my heart with how it relates to every day events with amazing passion, emotion and humor.

She published a book of poems, "You Gave Me Wings" in 2007. She's also self-published three books. Two of them with another poet on the site monty31802. Her first book was "Love, Julie", the second "Flying Free", a collection of her and Monty's poetry. The third was "A Long Road Home", this one also used some of Monty's poetry as well as her own, and by permission some poetry of a few of the servicemen - this book has many photographs, even one of her in 1955 at Fort McClellan, Alabama at 18 when she joined the Women's Army Corps.

She is also very busy on our site, entering poetry contests, being involved in groups and sharing her new poems with us. I asked her to write a short piece about herself so we can learn a little more about her.

COUNTRYMOM-JUST REMEMBER ME

Born in the pre-depression year of 1936, the ninth child in the family. Grew up in the country, joined the Women's Army Corps in 1955, Countrymom was an Army wife, mother of three, and has worked all her life. Her greatest joy is in writing, and she has found a home here at Writing.Com where she plans to spend the rest of these "golden years"!

SUNSHINE AND CLOVER DAYS

The years have been long and I've quite forgotten
the warmth of your smile and your loving ways,
but seeing you in passing with someone new
bring back memories of sunshine and clover days.

The morning sun filters down through the trees
and brightens the silver that highlights your hair.
You walk with firm step, a purpose driven gait
as you look back and see me standing there.

Are you remembering the love that we shared?
Does it come back to taunt you now and again?
The melodies that echo still silently play on
and I love you as much now as I loved you then.

You take her hand and turn away from the past,
leaving me broken with dreams that still amaze.
I slowly turn away, recapturing my composure,
walking away from the sunshine and clover days.

Those beautiful...sunshine and clover days...

WHILE THE WORLD SLEEPS

Another day has come and gone
and somehow I made it through;
I tried so hard to concentrate
yet my thoughts were all of you.

It doesn't seem quite right
that things happened this way;
There is more loss than gain
since you said you couldn't stay.

In the silence of the night,
listen as a lost soul weeps;
Teardrops stain my pillow
while the world sleeps.

Morning comes - and mourning;
I must face whatever lies ahead.
It takes every bit of courage
not to face the day with dread.

The pain of losing you cuts deep
and yet I know I must survive -
to try and make the best of it,
find some good in being alive.

In the silence of the night,
listen as a lost soul weeps;
Teardrops stain my pillow
while the world sleeps.

Sometimes I dream of tomorrow
and I see the sun shine through;
a quiet walk on a sandy beach
in a world that's good and true.

If I can just bear the sorrow,
look for better days to come;
I may be able to forget you
when all is said and done.

In the silence of the night,
listen as a lost soul weeps;
Teardrops stain my pillow
while the world sleeps.

Summer nights are so perfectly timeless.
Warm, humid air can seduce and possess.
Evenings are full of wonder and surprise.
When else can you dance until sunrise?

As the sun begins to tire and dusk settles in,
The air starts to cool; it's chilling on the skin.
Summer nights demonstrate nature at ease;
It shows in the calming, warm summer breeze.

Head to the ballpark to see your favorite team.
America's favorite pastime; watching is a dream!
Fireworks and lightning reveal a bouquet of stars,
A midsummer night's dream; a dream that is ours.
