Film Festivals. They're exciting and fun, showing off not only the city they're hosted in, but they also provide a platform to introduce some of drama's most notable films. This newsletter will explore the history of film festivals and highlight some of the more notable events.

You've heard of the Cannes, Sundance, and Toronto festivals, but what exaculty is a film festival? A film festival is an organized presentation of films in a single place. Usually, there's a focus on a specific genre or subject matter.
The start of film festivals goes way back to the 1920's, springing up in countries to offset Hollywood's dominance in the film industry. Surprisingly, the first true festival came into being as a result of Benito Mussolini. He had a passion for using films to promote his political views and propaganda. He built up Italy's native film industry to the determint of it's foreign language films. In 1932, Venice held it's first festival. Between 1935-1939 the awards given out favored Italian and German films. French participants protested and walked out. They went back to France and created their own festival - The Cannes film festival.
 THE CANNES FILM FESTIVAL
Cannes is a city on the French Riveria. It hosted it's first international festival in September 1939. Included in the program was the movie, "The Wizard of Oz." Unfortunately, the only movie seen was the opening movie, "The Hunchback of Notre Dame." Germany invaded Poland the day of the opening and the festival's owner postponed it. It wouldn't re-open until 1946.
The Cannes festival is generally one that focuses on international films. Filmmakers pay an entry fee to have their film considered. To reduce the number of films for consideration, the length of the festival was changed to 13 days. Cannes is an important showcase for European films, and given the media exposure, a strong launching point for international films. It's generally held during the spring.
 THE TORONTO FILM FESTIVAL
The Toronto festival debuted in 1976 and was originally called the Festival of Festivals. It's known as an international festival. Toronto, like Cannes, requires filmmakers to pay a fee to have their works considered for screening. It's held in September, the Thursday after Labor Day and lasts 10 days, screening between 300-400 films. It's considered the premiere film event in North America and is used as a platform to general Oscar buzz.

THE SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL
The Sundance festival began in 1978 as the Utah/Us Festival and was hosted in Salt Lake City. The purpose was to draw filmmakers to Utah and promote independent filmmakers. The festival was sponsored in part by Robert Redford. Initially it was held in September, but was moved to January on the advice of actor Sydeny Pollack who thought that a film festival at a ski resort in winter would draw attention away from Hollywood.
In 1991, the festival was renamed Sundance after one of Robert Redford's film characters.
"Saw" and "The Blair Witch Project" debuted at the Sundance Film Festival.
TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL
The Tribeca film festival is relatively new having been founded in 2002 by Jane Rosenthal and Robert DeNiro. The goal of the festival is to promote international films, celebrate New York City as a major film making center, and help the recovery of lower Manhattan after 9/11.
THE LONDON FILM FESTIVAL
This festival is 52 years old. Last year it was held between 15-30 October and featured over 300 films from 60 countries. The festival highlights new films from all over the world and is sponsored by the British Film Institute and The TImes.
"Frost/Nixon" debuted at the London Film Festival.
  INTERESTING FACTS
The first film festival was held in Venice, Italy.
The longest concecutive running film festival is the Edinburgh Film Festival, held every year since 1947.
The Kara Film Festival is an international festival that takes place in Karachi, Pakistan. It debuted in 2001.
