Letter from the editor

A friend of mine read a cyberpunk novel because she didn’t know what cyberpunk was… last I checked with her, she’d made it through a third of the novel and still didn’t have a good idea.

Cyberpunk - Stories set in the near-future and focus on the relationships between human beings and advanced technology (not just computers). You’re likely to find isolated, rebellious male antiheroes as the protagonist who drifts through a meaningless, shattered world. The tone is distant in a cool, calculated way, and you won’t find anything sentimental about it.

Steampunk – Related to Cyberpunk, the setting is often from the Victorian era with the assumption that higher technology occurred from there. Modern attitudes and theories are not woven into these stories.

Urban Fantasy – These stories are set in modern times, but add in the fantasy to the city setting. The protagonist faces circumstances either in an open or closed world. (Open or closed refers to whether or not the fantastical elements’ existence are widely accepted or concealed.)

Science Fantasy – a blending of the science fiction and fantasy, usually with strong elements of a magical reference with the setting of a more scientific kind like space travel.

Utopia/ Dystopia – Utopia is the perfect world, while Dystopia would be the opposite.
There are several more subgenres of the science fiction and fantasy genres, but not enough room to cover them here. For a few more references:

Acme
Informative newsletter, Sesh. I'm glad you popped in a link to Mr Waltz's thoughts on sci-fi/fantasy. I read it a while back, and it's a good exploration of the subject. *Thumbsup* I also appreciated the links to current fantasy contests/activities; I might just dip my nib *Smile*

I certainly hope you did!
