Setting


Your setting is unique. It’s the part of your story that helps set the genre, because without the setting and how it effects your plot, it wouldn’t be a fantasy or science fiction story. It’s up to you how to make it different. Many stories are set on Earth with little twists.

It isn’t just how it’s different; it’s why. Your world may include two moons. I wouldn’t expect a fantasy to go into the scientific factors, but I would expect something in the mythology, calendar, holidays, or something to change because of it. Those might not even come into play during your story. The author needs to have the details figured out, just like backstory on the characters.

If you’re making up a world from scratch, you need to make sure the reader sees it like you do. This can be difficult to weave into the story without stopping the plot to dump in four pages of description. There was a time when that was acceptable in writing, but it doesn’t work now.

Often I try to get a friend to read the story, or take it to a writing group. If they can’t see what’s going on with the description provided, it’s time to go back and edit to show more.

Shaara Your Cyberpunk article was interesting. I have attempted to read short stories in this vein. They leave me cold. I didn't know there were variations. That part was especially fascinating. Also, I didn't know the meaning of Dystopia. Good to know a new word. Thanks for your article.

*Bigsmile* There are so many subgenres; it's hard to know where to begin.

A thinker never sleeps Great newsletter. Neuromancer is great cyberpunk fiction if not a little heavy. Ghost in the shell , witchblade and Cowboy Bebop are very interesting futuristic anime.

More to add to the reading list! I knew about Neuromancer, but not the rest.
