Discussing Mystery in Fiction


Mystery fiction is always exciting to read. The genre has fascinated storytellers and listeners for millenia.

In the tales of One Thousand and One Night we follow the journey of a box which turns out to contain a dead body. The man who opens the box launches an investigation and thus the murder mystery unfolds.

The classical whodunit has been retold in many versions by many authors. Edgar Allan Poe's "The Murders In The Rue Morgue" is a famous example. Raymond Chandler's character Philip Marlowe had to solve many mysterious crimes that ranged from finding lost objects to solving murders.

Reading mystery books can be fun and frustrating. Sometimes the solution turns out to be a convoluted scheme that only gets revealed in the final chapter, without relevant clues to pick up on during the whole book. Agatha Christie's Miss Marple series often left me unsatisfied with her answers.

In contrast, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes series made me follow each subtle hint that was sowed throughout the books. The final explanation of the riddle always reminded me to take every clue serious and never discount a seemingly unimportant observation.

Stephen King has successfully created books that combine mystery with horror or supernatural themes. Undead animals, a creepy clown, the car that drove by itself all come to mind.
