SPRING RAIN
The spring rain bellowed like a beast outside while W.D. stabbed at his keyboard and attempted to write his Horror/Scary Newsletter. Thunder crushed the heavens, lightning tore at it, and then as if in pain, the gray, tortured sky lowered its heavy-laden head and finally began to weep.
Hearing the rain roar, he stood and went to the window. He watched in awe as the pounding downpour hammered at the pavement. Where the hell’s all that water coming from? he thought.
The chill of the wet weather seeped into his bones and forced him to zip up his sweatshirt. I guess it’s as good a time as any to write something frightening. Hell, the atmosphere is perfect, and this is one monster of a storm.
He slid back into his computer chair and made-ready to type. Something worrisome, perhaps? Something fear-provoking and unsettling to the mind: a troubling thought, a disturbing dream, or just a disquieting truth.
And so he wrote…
The universe is vast and God is very busy.
Is my immortal soul as important as galaxies, as important as anything in all of Creation?
I believe it is.
Actually I couldn’t tolerate life without the conviction that it has meaning and design.
So why do I feel as if I am a sparrow whose fall has gone unnoticed?
I have a doubt.
Again the drumming rain made him look toward the window. Man, it’s really coming down. And again he stood to observe the phenomenon.
The deluge cascaded across the eaves of the roof distorting the torrential downpour. In all his life he had never seen anything like it before. The water saturated the yard, overflowed the flower beds, flooded the street, and still it continued to pour until there was no more room for the new water that fell.
W.D. watched as the barrage splashed upon the road; higher and higher it splattered as if the earth had become the bottom of a titanic waterfall. It jetted into the air, spewed summits of lofty towers until . . . it began to take form.
“What the hell . . .”
At first the flood gushed a massive body of water that rose above the drown street, and then formed legs and arms that turned and twisted in torrents of surging spray; its sopping head grew upon colossal shoulders of liquid.
W.D. couldn’t move. He looked in disbelief at something there was no name for . . . no rational explanation.
He sensed it knew he was there, watching, and slowly turned its fluid head toward him. Their eyes locked for a moment, and then it rushed forward.
W.D. instinctively stepped back, threw his arms over his face anticipating the impact just as the beast slammed into the window, cracked the glass, and then spilled upon the yard.
His wife stepped into the room. “Wow, some downpour, huh?”
“What? Oh . . . yeah, it’s really coming down.”
She looked at him oddly. “I see you’re working. I’ll just come back later.”
“No . . . no, it’s okay, really. I think I need to take a little break.”
“Come upstairs and I’ll throw together some nice hot soup. It’s cold down here, I don’t see how you can work like this.” Then she turned and left quietly like a spring breeze.
W.D. looked out again at the storm. Slowly he traced the crack in the window with his fingertip.
