About This Newsletter

A banner for the Romance/Love newsletter.

Since October is defacto "paranormal" month, filled with ghosts, goblins, werewolves, witches, and vampires, I thought I'd interview Romance Author, J. Morgan. J. Morgan has a successful vampire series with Desert Breeze Publishing. J. Morgan is such a sweetie. I adored interviewing him. I also enjoy his writing - it pulls a reader right in and he really does write from "the funny bone."

Letter from the editor

STEPH: I'd like to welcome paranormal romance author, J. Morgan for an interview this month. J. Morgan's tag line is "Romance Straight From the Funny Bone" and he is a best selling author for Desert Breeze Publishing. He also goes by JMO.

Jmo: Thanks for having me, Steph.

J. Morgan, romance author

STEPH: Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Jmo: There's not much to tell. I'm a simple country boy with a penchant for telling tall tales. What you're not buying that? Well, it's almost the truth. I am a country boy straight from the wilds of Northern Louisiana . From a humble beginning of make-believe battles between my Star Wars action figures on the living room floor a love of telling stories was born. From there it was a short hop to writing my stories on notebooks. Easier that way, really. No one complains when you leave a notebook on the floor. 50 or 60 action figures they do.

STEPH: - Can you tell us a little about your Vampire Series, Love Bites?

** Image ID #1712336 Unavailable **

Jmo: The Love Bites series is my homage to all the things I love, great adventures and romance. Love at First Stake introduces us to Savannah and Donatello. From their romance and a crazed Vampire bent on world domination we're drawn into a world beyond the one we know. A world where Vampires are kinda whacky and the Vampire Slayers are even weirder. I know that sounds a little off putting, if you like your Vampires dark and broody, but there is a great story that runs through the series. Each book can be read as a stand alone story, but altogether you've got an epic adventure worthy of Indiana Jones. If Indy happened to be Vampire, that is.

STEPH: - Can you tell us a little about your Werewolf Series, The Southern Werewolf Chronicles?

Jmo: Unlike the Love Bites books, The Southern Werewolf Chronicles is the continuing story of Madison Lee. Southern deb. Business woman. Loving daughter. WEREWOLF! Thought that last one needed all cabs. Were Love Blooms, the first book in the series, is the beginning of a cautionary tale of who not to sleep with on a European Vacation. Namely, a werewolf in a hot guy's clothing. Maddy's life had been perfect until she came home with unsightly hair growth and a raging flea infestation. One year later, she has more or less learned to cope with it. Or, she thought she had until said hot werewolf shows up along with a group of monster hunters. Now not only does she have a case of unrequited hots but people out to kill her, and they don't even know she uses duct tape on her bikini line. Hey, this is the South. We use it for everything.

As I said, The Southern Werewolf Chronicles follows Maddy's life as a werewolf, trying to come to grips with being one and more importantly loving one. Things will just get more complicated as the series goes on. I'd tell you how, but then you'd know more than Maddy does. A lady's got to keep her secrets, even the ones she doesn't know about.

STEPH - Your latest release is an Urban Fantasy called "Immortally Yours." What's it about?

Jmo: Immortally is about a man cursed to live forever. Some curse, huh? But, imagine living forever while everyone you've ever known or cared about dies around you. Let's not even go into the world changing around you. Needless to say, Chase Michaels has pretty much given up on everything except breathing and he's not too sure he wants to do that. That includes women, by the way. Well, it did until Belle Gardner steps into his life. If he thought his life was complicated before, he hasn't seen anything yet. She throws him into a world where fantasy is reality and curse or no curse, it just might kill him. If Belle doesn't first.

STEPH - How long have you been writing?

Jmo: That's a hard one. In one form or another, I'd have to say for most of my life. With a purpose, for the past four years. With a little push from my wife, who is also an author, I stole her computer and started work on my first novel in 2006. The less said about that book the better, but the next one was good enough to get me published. Since then I haven't been able to stop.

STEPH - What attracts you to the paranormal?

Jmo: I'd have to say, growing up on the stuff. My favorite TV show as a kid was Dark Shadows. No, I'm not that old. They have these things called reruns. Shesh! I think the human nature is drawn to those things that make us afraid. With my Paranormals, I've just chosen to laugh fear in the face, and run away if that doesn't work.

STEPH - Is it true you love to collect comics?

Jmo: I don't collect them. I'm addicted to them! As a kid, they were my first friends. When I was six, I had pneumonia and spent more time inside a hospital than a kid should. My grandmother would bring me comics to read and my love began there. So after more than 35 yrs, the love is still growing. Truthfully, a lot of what I've learned about writing and pacing came from reading comics. When you get right down to it, what is an issue of a comic book but a chapter in a greater work?

STEPH: - How long have you been publishing?

Jmo: Since 2006. I had my first contract with a now defunct e-publisher. I've been both lucky and unlucky in this business when it's come to publishers. I don't think I would change any of it, good or bad. It has all made my dream of becoming an author that more special. Nothing worth having is ever easy. For all those aspiring writers out there, remember that. Another piece of advice I'd like to impart. Talent and skill will get you a lot of places in this business but remember this is a business. Write like a writer, but when it comes time to decide who or where you want to place your trust act like a businessperson. Research those decisions as vigilantly as you do the facts you put in your books. That might have been more than you asked, but I think it bears a lot on the question and is something most new authors don't even consider.

STEPH: - What's your writing space like?

Jmo: Cluttered with TV remotes and DVD cases. An occasional dog or cat wanders through. They're easer for me to ignore, than the remotes and DVDS.

STEPH: - Where can readers find you on the Internet?

Jmo: Amazon mostly, but that's just because I have a few dollars left on my credit card. Oh, you mean my website and stuff. Could we please not let my wife know about me and Amazon? She thinks the card is maxed out. I'd hate to sully my shopping with her shopping.

But, here's all the places you can find me-well other than Amazon, because I'm there too as an author and not a shopper.

Jmo: Thanks for having me. It's been an absolute pleasure. Do you validate parking? I've left my ip address double parked. No, well you can't kill a guy for trying.

Ask & Answer

Feedback is from my 22 SEP 2010 Romance/Love Newsletter:

Hey Steph, Thanks for the overview of Gothic romance. An entertaining and informative read.

BIG BAD WOLF is hopping
Love stories are always interesting. You never know who will fall in love, or why.

A.T.B: It'sWhatWeDo
Ah, it's good to see a straight-forward summation of GoRo literature. As a dude (and a fan of Impressionism/Realism), I typically don't find myself fawning over Romance necessarily. I'd likely choose Daisy Miller or The Fountainhead if I needed a love story. (Snicker with me, English Majors...) I have to say, though, Southern and Suburban Gothic were my training grounds for fiction. Everything from Yellow Wallpaper to Donnie Darko. Gothic influences are everywhere you look...kinda like vampires, these days. But like with my romance, I want my vampires bloody and my werewolves rabid. I don't really need 'em to mate. *wink*
