Letter from the editor

I receive disturbing news about the imminent death of a beloved friend. The house is empty, and I choose to sit by the Christmas tree in the living room. My eyes fall on one of the numerous ornaments I have received from my friend over the years. My mind is a turmoil of disjointed thoughts ranging to fond and treasured moments together to rails against fate to the acknowledgment that at eighty-five years of age, she has lived a long, exceedingly satisfactory life full of her family, her charitable works, extensive travel and being one of those truly good people. My Bichon wakes up in her bed and pads over to me, jumping into my lap and relaxing there with a loud sigh.

How did she know that at that precise moment I really needed her, needed something alive to hold? I went outside later to collect the mail and coming to greet me was every outside cat in the neighborhood. Apparently all the dogs who live at the hospice house where my friend is staying all come in to visit her and have free access to the small chapel on the premises. They always seem to know when someone is in there too.

Pets are companions, company and someone to talk to. They listen exceedingly well and you just know they understand. Their capacity for unconditional love is legion.

Consider giving your characters a pet. It is a great way for your characters to voice their thoughts whether mulling a problem, ranting or raving or simply feeling alone. Pets can respond and it takes on the quality of a conversation.

Whether centering a story on the antics, life or memoirs of a beloved critter or using them as an additional character, they can certainly add much to a story.
