What is Review Cheating?
As a Moderator on Writing.com, I'm often privy to seeing review cheaters at work. I sometimes know when one has been deleted, and I've seen a variety of methods for cheating. Although review cheaters are rare, they do make an impact on the site. Imagine posting a poem in your port, expecting honest feedback, and instead getting an email that says: "This is great!" with 100 exclamation points. You probably wouldn't have a high opinion of the reviewer, right? You might even ask yourself, "What if this is the kind of review I'm always going to get on this site?"
Thankfully, review cheaters are few and far between; the majority of reviewers on this site are here to encourage you to keep writing and help you make your writing the best it can be. So, what exactly is a review cheater? How do you prevent yourself from becoming one?
It's hard to put a definition of "review cheater," because it involves a variety of tactics, usually used in order to receive GP's for reviews and climb ahead in the review rankings. The most important thing to know is, review cheating doesn't happen on accident! If you don't know how to review, or simply don't have much to say about something you're reviewing, you have little chance of being accused of being a review cheater. If you put absolutely no effort into your reviews, or simply copy and paste the same review for multiple pieces, and you do it with the intent of receiving credit anyway, then you probably fall within the review cheater category.
Review cheaters leave a trail that is usually picked up by a Staff Member or Moderator. It's considered a serious offense, because Staff at the site take pride in running a clean, spam-free and helpful site for writers. Review cheating can be grounds for account termination. Staff and Moderators watch out for such behavior on the Public Review Page, but if you feel as if you've been cheated with a review, you can always report the offense using "Submit a Complaint" [E], and it will be looked into.
Writing.com is a respected writing website, so let's keep it that way! Report review cheaters. If you're here to cheat the system, don't even try it. The members of Writing.com deserve honest efforts to grow as writers.
