The Meaning of Valentine's Day


Take a look at any grocery store or drug store these days and you'll inevitably see a big trend: lots if pink and red hearts. Valentine's Day is here, and so are the heart shaped boxes of candy, paper valentines and over-sized stuffed animals holding giant hearts.

Valentine's Day is supposed to be about showing the ones we love how much we care about them. From the amount of stuff we see in the stores each February, one might think that the way to a person's heart is through tangible things. While it's nice to get candy, cards and flowers from the one you love, have you ever asked yourself why we only think to give this stuff out one day a year? What ever happened to surprising someone with a special romantic treat for no reason at all? And why must that romantic treat have a $19.95 price tag?

For the next year, I challenge all of you to give those you love personalized, heartfelt gifts that don't cost a thing. Use your skill at writing to tell those you love how much they matter to you instead of buying expensive flowers and gifts. Place a short note in a lunchbox. Leave a handwritten card on the kitchen counter. Send an "I'm thinking of you" email. Write a personalized poem or song. Hand make your Valentine's Day cards. A little love all year long says so much more than money can buy.

Oh Crys, the memories you bring back. *Smile* I remember my first boyfriend (first grade). He was sweet, blond and had this really cool Matchbox car shirt that he loved. *Laugh* His name was Pat and although there is no traumatic memory there, I do remember a boy I had a crush on (but I don't remember his name) somewhere near that same age group later on. I didn't call him a cutesy name that I can remember but I did take his baseball cap off his head on the way home and (yes get this) I dug a hole (with my hands!) and buried it in the dirt right in front of him. Now I have no idea WHY I would think this would impress him *Laugh* but I can assure you, it did not. I have the school pictures with a black eye to prove it. *Frown* My brother stood up for me and got in trouble as I remember (for breaking his arm) and needless to say, I never touched another boy's hat and will never forget that day. Crys, your Young Love editorial was right on. And I agree with you that those first crushes / relationships definitely have a bearing on helping to make us the person we become. The same was true with me and my first crush.Cynthia and I were both ten years old. But she looked more like 14, at least from the neck up. Flawless, slightly dard complexion, and wonderful long, black hair. Unfortunately our school district changed the boundaries of each school's territory a couple years later, and she went to a different school. But I firmly believe those early years with her in my life had a bearing on what I've become. And I love that idea. Great newsletter. Keep up the great work! - Incurable Romantic
