Letter from the editor

When I was speaking to Jay's debut novel is out now! earlier this week, we were talking about my genre obsession. I love talking about genre, and I love clarifying what the different genres are - especially since some of them can be confusing when placing our items into them.

Some of the subtle differences can sometimes be hard to track down! One thing that Jay mentioned was the differences between Action/Adventure and Thriller, and how most people get them confused. Loving this, I promptly stole the topic for this very newsletter.

What is Action/Adventure?
Action and Adventure can actually be broken into two different genres, but are so similar, that many put them together.

According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_genres)

Action is:

A story, similar to Adventure, but the protagonist usually takes a risky turn, which leads to desperate situations (including explosions, fight scenes, daring escapes, etc.)

And Adventure is:

A story about a protagonist who journeys to epic or distant places to accomplish something.

I suppose it is easy to see why these two are often put together. While journeying to an epic or distant place, it would make the story if it took a risky turn! I mean, really, what adventures don't take risky turns? Not many that I know. This is why the genres would be put together on places like WdC. Putting them together makes them more complete.

What is Thriller?

According to the same website, Thriller is:

A story that is usually a mix of fear and excitement. It has traits from the suspense genre and often from the action, adventure or mystery genres, but the level of terror makes it borderline horror fiction at times as well.

I want you to notice... it has traits from the action and adventure genres (as well as many others), but is not synonymous. Now, there is nothing saying that a Thriller can't also be an Action/Adventure. There can be a mixture of fear and excitement as an adventurer makes his journey that takes risky turns, but it is not a requirement.

These are not synonymous. While they might go together often, they are actually very different by definition.

If you are ever uncertain about how a genre should be defined (especially on a place such as WdC where there are many, many genres to choose from), don't be afraid to ask a friend or a site moderator (blue case or purple case) for assistance. It is important to put your items into the correct genres so you may attract the readership your item is aimed toward.

Now, let's get to writing some Action and Adventure!

Ask & Answer

I have received so many wonderful responses from those reading this newsletter! While life has kept me hopping, I still need to sit down and really hash all of your ideas out so I can bring you some newsletters with topics you asked for. I have started, but I want to make sure it's truly good. *Smile* We shall see if I can get this hopping next month.

However, a clarification of genre is definitely one of the things asked for, so this might just be it for that!

Remember, if you have ideas for newsletter topics, or topics you have questions about or would like to see, feel free to submit a question, and we will do our best to respond to you in a timely manner.

Thank you!
