Political Poetry
An election year brings on the plethora of political campaign ads-some ridiculous, some annoying, and others very powerful. We all know the power poetry can have, so today I thought we'd talk about political poetry today.
Political poetry can be on a hot issue, pride (or disappointment) in one's country, war, political figures, and more. I've written poems about drugs, the homeless, abuse, politicians, and hate crimes. Each of these could be considered political poetry as well as poems on those topics.
Many great poets have written political poetry, such as Allen Ginsberg, Langston Hughes, John Milton, Sir Walter Scott, Walt Whitman, and many more. My favorite in this list is Langston Hughes. Much of what he wrote was about his confusion with his heritage and how he viewed himself, and about racial issues. Some of the poems I feel are the most powerful are: As I Grew Older, Cross, Deceased, Democracy, and Mother to Son.
How do you create a powerful political poem? The same way you create any powerful poem. Take a moment in time and shine a light on it-drawing the reader in. Use precise language. You get the idea, as this has been covered by me, as well as other editors of this newsletter.
