What scares you???

October is the horror/scary month at Writing.com and lots of writing contests pop up around Halloween. If you're not into the grimey guts and gloopy gore but still want to compete? Try comedy! You can still do a great job building suspense but the climax can be funny. Give it that "I nearly peed my pants but now I'm laughing" twist. If the contest is looking specifically for the scariest, perhaps try something you're comfortable with. If you don't like blood and gore, try dark and creepy. Who doesn't despise a cobweb across the face?

You can always find a good phobia and enhance it in your story. Does your character get stuck in the mud? Amp up their fears of drowning. Do they get stuck in a closet? Make them claustrophobic and screaming to get out. If spiders give you the willies, try scorpions or rats. The dark can get much darker when the moon is obscured.

The point is, you can still write a scary story without blood in it. Or vampires. Or talking pigs. (Hey, everyone has their scary thing.) If you love to write blood and gore, try switching it up and write something a child could enjoy. Ketchup or cherry jelly make for a fun scare when you're a kid. So don't cross off the horror contests - Write on and Scare on!

Prompt: Pretend your family is having a family reunion for Halloween and all of the kids ages 8 to 18 are staying at your house and expecting a scary bedtime story. You must take a ghost or scary story your family has told over and over again and rewrite it. It has to be scary enough the 18 year old's almost believe it but not so scary the 8 year old's will stay awake all night out of fear of the monster or ghost in the story. Hard line to write I know. But, my family has a story like that. I'm sure yours does too.

BIG BAD WOLF is hopping says: You just have to have fun.

Nixie Martell cheerleader answers: First words out of my mouth to any new member. Find a group and join. You'll make instant friends, have vast knowledge by sending a simple "help" in an email, and be immersed in the WdC before you can say "Who's this SM and SMS?"
