On Tuesday January 16 I went to work at 6:40 a.m. It appeared to be a normal day, then Jean, our 73-year-old housekeeper, mentioned that a nurse from the hospital where I used to work had been found dead in her home the day before. A current coworker of mine who just happened to be working with me that day also used to work at that particular hospital, so she and I started texting people who still work there in an attempt to find out who it was, hoping it wasn't someone we knew and liked. No one seemed to know anything, so after lunch we called the secretary at the other hospital and was told it was Renae Lane, a vivacious, healthy, very active 56-year-old registered nurse we'd both worked with and loved.
I was shocked. I'd run through all the other staff members in my mind, mentally checking them off as I went: Nope, it can't be him, He's young and healthy. I guess it COULD be her. She's got heart problems and had to be hauled off by ambulance twice under my watch alone. Nah, he's an athlete. She's too ornery! The possibility that it could be Renae never entered my mind. She was a masters-prepared registered nurse who had Boise State Broncos (football) season tickets. She was single and always out doing something. She was slim and healthy and young and active. She loved her children and grandchildren. I thought she was the picture of perfect health and hoped to look and feel as great as she did when I get to be her age.
I couldn't believe it. I still can't believe it.
Renae and I were friends, but I hadn't seen her since I quit in May of 2011. I was busy; she was busy. We had a lunch date once that she cancelled because she had something come up unexpectedly with one of her tenants (she owned duplexes and had multiple tenants). I thought and spoke of her often and would say aloud, "Man, I really need to call her," but I never did. Now I never can.
Ironic, isn't it? In last week's newsletter I wrote, "We don't know how much time we've got. Our lives can be snuffed out in the blink of an eye. Never leave your words of love and appreciation unsaid. Hug your spouse, tell your friends how they've blessed your life, let your children know how much you love them. Don't leave people wondering how you felt about them after you're gone. Tell them. Tell them now." The NL came out the day Renae was found dead in her home, apparently the victim of a massive coronary event.
Did she know how much I loved and respected her? We didn't express our feelings about one another, we just knew, but oh how I wish I'd told her! How I wish I'd called her all those times I thought about her. I wish she knew the things she did and said still make me laugh. I wish she knew that I was proud to be her friend, and that it was an honor to know her. I wish she knew that she had one of the best laughs I've ever heard. I wish she knew I admired her and wanted to be more like her. I wish I'd told her how she blessed my life and that knowing her made me a better person. I wish....
I wish I'd said thank you, and I wish I'd had the chance to say goodbye.

I HAVE heard about this book (mainly on Hay House Radio and in speeches by Dr. Wayne Dyer), but I have not read it yet. Thank you for the reminder.
