S Specific
M Measurable
A Attainable
R Relevant
T Timely

A contest asks you for a specific type of writing. whether poetry, short stories, novels, a certain genre. The contest host gives you specific expectations. This makes it easier for you to get started since you've got a direction.

The success of your writing will be measurable in the review you get and if you win a prize, then you know you're really on to something good.

Writing an entry for a contest gives you an attainable goal. Of course, there are several difficulty levels to contests, and some have tough rules and strict judges, but you can write something for just about any contest.

Make your entry relevant to the contest. The closer you walk that fine line between writing according to the host's guidelines while letting your imagination run wild will make your entry more likely to be the winning submission.

Use the contest deadline as a help in getting your writing drafted, polished and submitted in a timely manner. Don't wait for the last five minutes before the contest closes to start working on your entry.
