Crediting Others

This newsletter isn't about writing a thesis or footnotes, but a simpler idea to implement on this site. It's a suggestion for linking others in your items.

For example, you decide to enter Really Cool Contest A and write this fabulously funny story that places second in the competition. You get some nice reviews and the other contestants congratulate you. Then what? Well, a nice idea would be to link the contest at the bottom of your winning entry. (Hey, you're down there adding a word count anyway!) And perhaps a link to the first place contestant's item. Not only does this make you look like a really cool member, it helps guide readers from your awesome story to a site contest and another entry. This keeps readers sending reviews and keeps a fun contest going because people are finding it and entering. It's a win-win thing.

The Updates system would let the other people know you're linking them and you'll know if they post your name as a winner. Mention this contest in your Notebook and send some Fans over. This creates more traffic in your portfolio and theirs, creates more views and hopefully more reviews. While I mention reviews, I might add something else - if you random review, or happen to be just looking through a person's portfolio page and decide to review something, let them know how you got there. Tell them you found them on Random Review or from a link somewhere else. It's always good to know where your traffic is coming from, even if it is from clever choices from the Genres and Keywords area when creating an item - you do fill those out, don't you??? Don't be stuck on the dreaded "Other".

I have an image shop and I'm always flattered when someone links my name or my shop in their image item. It's great advertising and I can see on my Item Statistics that I get visits from links in other member's items. It doesn't always translate into an instant purchase, but it's good to know members have come over and looked around. Hopefully, they bookmarked it and will stop in again. I advertise in Bid Click and get visits from ads, but it's even better when someone links my items for free. *Wink* So talk up other members and help people find their contest or activity...the more the merrier!

Write on!

Last month's question: How do you use the Virtual Dice?

Dawn Embers replied: I actually used the virtual dice when I held a giveaway on my blogs that was unrelated to WDC. I gave every entrant numbers based on the number of entries they qualified for, then put the dice range to match the number of entries. Rolled the dice for each prize in order to pick a winner. Worked out pretty well.

warriormom answered: I love using the virtual dice. One way I've used it is with my "Invalid Item group. One month I ran a contest where reviewers' names were placed in the virtual hat. Each review they did for our group earned them a name in the hat. The more reviews a member did, the more times his name was put into the "hat." At the end of the contest, I "drew" the winner from the virtual hat and awarded them a merit badge. It was lots of fun, and we had lots of participation.
