Getting Motivated

What gets you motivated to write? For me, getting started is easy, I find a character or story in my head and feel the need to write it down. But what keeps you writing? Most stories, unless they're flash fiction, can't be typed out in one sitting. So, what brings you back to the keyboard to finish? Is it competition? Competitive spirit could be one factor in finishing...perhaps you and a friend are both entering the same contest. You've seen their story and the idea you had in mind seems to feel better. Pushing yourself to create a better character or a more interesting plot line can be motivating.

Acknowledgement. Yeah, we all like to think we have great stories in us, but when you win a contest against your peers, it feels awesome. That alone can be great motivation to write the next short story or novel. Knowing your writing is considered winning content can give you the confidence to submit your work for publishing.

Gift points! Maybe this contest has a big prize and it's almost time to renew your membership. The current site contest, "Short Shots: Official WDC Contest, has some huge prizes. $100 in gift points can help you secure a membership for another year. One of the daily contests on our site, "The Writer's Cramp awards 10,000 gift points every day. Add those gift points to the ones you already earn reviewing and you can build a good sized gift point bank in no time.

Stick with it. Even if your story isn't a winner, consider yourself a champ. You stuck with the story until it was written and hopefully edited the daylights out of it. The personal satisfaction of finishing a project feels great. Write on!

Ask & Answer

This month's question: How do you stay motivated?

Last month's question: How do you help others by linking?

BIG BAD WOLF is hopping replied: I tend to post links to past Contest Entries on a special Static item that has a link to the contest. Sometimes those Past Entries, which might not have gotten anything from me, can get something from another person.

warriormom responded: This is an excellent newsletter! You covered some great ways to spread the word about contests and other activities. This is my favorite of all the newsletters, by the way.

I always put in my review how I came across the item and why I am reviewing it. I try to always include a link to any contest at the bottom of my entry. I'm trying to remember to use my Notebook more.
